I was under the impression the OP wanted to vent as she was very, very, very upset at the time of her posting. She should be allowed to do this here just like anyone else - who cares if it sounds venomous - let her get it out without making her feel worse.

For what it's worth, I once leaned over a teeny tiny candle flame (thing tea light) and a very small strand of hair brushed it. The rest of my hair had been put up which may or may not have been a bad thing, anyway I lost a foot and a half of hair on one side of my head in less than 20 seconds, and if my sister hadn't thrown me on the floor and beaten it out I probably would have gotten some very serious burns.

This is with ZERO products in my hair as well. No hairspray, gel, nothing. I don't think the OP was overreacting in the least to defend herself. The lighter girl should have been punished as well instead of getting away with attacking another student.

Got a question here . . . (oh, by the way, Island Dog, you're absolutely right!) anyway . . . back to the question.

Is the OP in a place where there is an age limit for smoking? If so, why did her classmate have a lighter? What legitimate use do you have for a lighter in school?

No legitimate use for lighters in school IMO. You can't smoke in school, leave the lighter in the car. Kids think it's cool, or something. Like since you can't have cigarettes or pot in school, you carry a lighter and everyone knows you're so cool giving yourself lung cancer.

She's an angry kid because she defended herself?

I would have F**KED that girl up. Big time, no questions asked.

Some chick in school called my momma a diseased bitch. I ran her face along a chain link fence.

Wow, this thread exploded. I just wanted to agree with the above statement. I used to write poetry when I was emotional about something just to get it out. Some of my stuff probably makes me seem suicidal or something, but I'm not. ;)

And by the way, if a person had brought a lighter into the "zero tolerance policy" high school that I went to, they would have had an expulsion hearing...no joke.

Sorry, I don't see the connection to the OP.

I don't think you can get a girl in trouble just for having a lighter. Just because she has the means to smoke doesn't mean she does. It goes back to that joke where the police officer has the means to rape the lady out on the lake (who had the means to fish in said lake where it was prohibited) but ability does not equal intent.

Well, maybe I was brought up different.
Same. I wouldn't react violently to someone who came at me with a lighter but to each his/her own I guess. I've seen a dog burn (cremation, part of my job unfortunately) and the hair, while the first to burn off (being extraneous) does not go up in a poof in a split second.

I didn't mean she should be in trouble just for having the lighter, but I'd be asking questions about why she had the lighter given the circumstances. But I've spent a lot of years working on criminal cases ;)

Yes, and like the dog, if I were dead it wouldn't matter how long it took for my hair to burn even if you were watching. Members are speaking of the dangers involved with human hair being set on fire. I'm sure it certainly 'feels' like a split second when the hair is attached to you.

The point is how long it takes, not how long it feels like it takes.

I just feel like compiling some of the best posts in the thread....

Some of the adjustable lighters will throw a flame 4 inches high. Get that near hair with any kind of gel or spray in it . . . . or most clothing . . . . and human beings, by and large, are hard wired (we ARE animals, you remember) to have an immediate, primitive reaction to flame. Some of us have got that under control better than others.

Yah, both girls should have to deal with consequences. But the instigator should have the harsher consequences than the person reacting defensively. THAT would be justice.

But most of us who live in the harsh, real world know it ain't gonna go down that way.

Rigged lighters can be very dangerous, the flame is equivalent to a torch. I hate how "popular" kids think they can get away with ANYTHING, and need to be put in their place at times. In my world if you try a stunt like that your going to get you ass whipped. If you dont get the first hit, your done. And these people are ignorant enough to pour gas, liquor ect on you and burn you. Now I will NOT allow a situation to get that far, EVER. I will defend myself and will deal with the consequences later, rather be safe sitting in a court room than being torched alive, ;)
Unfortunately US schools don't work like the real world. Around here, unless you are physically backed into a corner where you cannot run away, you are not allowed to "defend yourself." And even then, if you fight back, you're STILL just as likely to be suspended along with the other student.
This was always made perfectly clear to us. If you defended yourself you knew what was going to happen. Most people defended themselves anyway and didn't cry about it - a suspension is worth defending your ass. It's just high school.
GO I said HAIR. And its happened before. Polyester goes up quickly too. This actually happened at my high school. A girl got 2nd degree burns just cause a boy was goofing around with a lighter. So you may trivialize it all you want, but it HAS happened, and people HAVE gotten hurt.
^And that it what it all boils down to, IMO. Trivializing a serious incident like being burned with a lighter.

At the very least the other girl should have been suspended too. Just cause she got pushed she gets off scott-free for having a ligher in school? She did violate the rules and here just bringing the lighter is grounds for suspension not to mention that she actually attempted to use it as a weapon (assuming this is true) I dont know where I stand on the OP's suspension but, Hello. that girl most definantly should be suspended. You cant just bring lighters to school.

I think a lighter can definitely be used as a weapon. And if someone had a lighter with the intention of burning me, then I would have probably pushed her back just out of natural reaction. Nobody has a right to defend themselves these days or what?

The point is how long it takes, not how long it feels like it takes.
I have been following but not saying much, however with hair... I will say this From what I have seen hair can and does catch fast sometimes, I watched my girlfriend bend over and her hair fell down and caught a candle, by the time she had jumped back it was on fire, we got it out but she lost a lot of hair, and the STINK:yikes:

I am not sure how I feel about all of the rest, but I do firmly believe hair can and sometimes will catch VERY fast..... IMO

You most definantly can be suspended for having a lighter in a public school. Not b/c of smoking but b/c its a LIGHTER. I know at my highschool there were rules specifically for that.

No you certainly have the right to defend yourself. It's the degree to which you do so.

I don't remember if it was in our rules or not. I don't think so. A buddy brought a lighter to school one day (actually several days but this was the only time he actively showed it around to our table) and was showing it off, in the lunch room, and no one said a word, not even the rent-a-cop (though that's not saying a lot considering).
