Pics on their way as soon as I get help from my daughter to upload them
~ I'm not that great on the computer. South Africa... I wouldn't know where to start! I lived in Johannesburg for 34 years of my life, in Durban for 6, then we lived in Switzerland for 8 (what a culture shock!!!!) and now I have been back in SA living in Cape Town for 6 months, and loving every minute. Oh boy, SO different to living in a first world country, but it is great to be back home.
Scenery-wise it is a BEAUTIFUL place, and I have been lucky enough to have travelled around the world, and I still am knocked out by the beauty of this place. There are so many different landscapes in one place, e.g. tropical, desert, savannah (sp?), mountains, beautiful beaches. We have a restaurant in Cape Town, and are very lucky to meet many tourists who all absolutely enjoy their visits over here. Last night I met a family from Portland, Oregon, who had their daughter with them ~ she works for the peace corps in Swaziland and is doing wonderful work over there. On a side note... they knew immediately that Phoebe was a French Bulldog, so I was doubly impressed
.
Politics... well, I'm sure all of you know about our political history. I'm not politically minded, but embarrassed enough by it and a man I admire very much is Nelson Mandela. Crime... another sore point. Unfortunately there is not enough accountability over here, and until our government can sort out that problem, they won't be top of the pops in my book.
One very special aspect of SA for me is the wild life. I LOVE trips to the bush and I love our wild life over here. I still get goose bumps when I see an African elephant in the wild ~ for me there is no greater sight.
Well.. enough rambling
. It is a land of contrasts, and we sure have our problems, but all that being said, I love being back here ~ I guess it feels like home.
P.S. Anyone coming over here for a holiday HAS to come to Cape Town... and naturally, HAS to come and say 'hi' to us here on the tip of Africa
