Beautiful photos!

It is great to live here, oh, and the 9 month long summers don't suck!
Argghhh... With winter closing in here, that sounds great.

This is going to sound a little strange, but apart from politics and elephants, the only thing I know about South Africa is that it has penguins. There was this special on Animal Planet about how penguins in this one colony came sneaking into the city (I think it was Cape Town) at night. It was hysterical. Anyone ever been there?

Yip, I've been there and also seen the programme ~ it was great :D . That is at a place near Cape Town called Boulders Beach which is in Simonstown. It is a GORGEOUS beach and you can swim and suntan with the penguins :) . Pics to follow!!

Holy cow it is gorgeous. I want to know more about the wildlife. Do you see elephants like you see bears here? Once in a blue moon? lol I can't believe I used that expression. What else is there? What kinds of things do you learn as a child when you go out in the wild? I mean, here, we learn about bear safety and how to keep animals away from our campsite. How to survive in cold weather ...stuff like that.

Can Meg and I crash at your place? We'll be there soon;)

Wow, the scenery is spectacular. After being in Vermont my whole life, I could never live anywhere that didn't have mountains, and yours are gorgeous.

I agree - more info on the wildlife, please:D

The wildlife is brilliant, and we have made trips to the bush since I was very young. I don't think it is like Canada in that there are elephants roaming around freely ~ we have many nature reserves in SA and also in many other African countries. The reserves are mainly in the northern part of SA and the bush is so beautiful.. thorn trees, umbrella thorns.. typical African landscapes. It is also worth going to neighbouring countries to enjoy their parks... e.g. Botswana, Namibia. Each one is so different, but they all offer the chance to view wonderful game. Over the years we have seen a lot of different game, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dog, hyena, elephants, rhinos, hippos, crocs, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest and many different antelope. Some parks offer 5 star 'bush' accommodation and others are completely wild. Once when we went to Namibia we arrived at our camp and were told by the game ranger that (tents are on stilts) there had been a pride of lion sleeping under our neighbouring tent the night before! In that particular camp there are no fences so one could encounter any kind of animal.

Sorry, rambling again, but I just love the wildlife. Interestingly, the animal that kills the biggest number of people in Africa is the... hippo! Have you seen the size of their jaws!!

I feel so ignorant right now. I guess I always pictured Africa to be all jungle area with tribes and huts scattered across the land. I am not being disrespectful to native africans... that's really how I always pictured it.

I probably got those images from my textbooks in highschool or perhaps some national geographic shows I've seen over the years.

Those were truly beautiful pics you shared. I am glad it enlightened my lack of knowledge about the country. I'd love to see more photos.

I love the second last one. Is that where you live? Do you have more from your city?
