Did we win the World Cup? There's some stuff about Algeria and injury time and London and I don't understand any of it. Lay it down simply for a non-soccer fan.

lol...not even close to the final yet...

We won our group today..WOOO it was AMAZING...I think my heart is still racing! Had we not won, we would not have moved on...but now we are on the top (we tied England in "points"...but the tie breaker for that is goals scored...and we scored more!)

Anyways...right now there are 8 groups of 4 (we were Group C). Each team within the group plays each other once (so each team plays 3 games). For a win, a team gets 3 points, a tie, they get 1 pt. (that is how we tied england in points)

Anyhoo...from there, the top 2 teams in each group move on...so we are now down to 16 teams. And this is just single game knockout. I dunno which group plays which, but the winner of one group plays the runner up of another group.

Then its quarterfinals, semi finals...finals.

I;m guessing by injury time, you mean the time they add once the 90 minutes is up? In soccer, the clock never stops...so that extra time is determined by the ref & it is to make up for time lost due to injuries/subs/other stuff

Its soooo much fun to watch...even if you dont understand the rules completely!!!!

For the first time in, I believe, 80 years, the US made it past the first round... and the winning goal was scored in the 91st minute- which means the game was a nail-biter.

The US actually made it to the quarter finals in 2002. Then we lost to Germany (my other favorite team) 1-0 on a Michael Ballack goal.

Dreeza's got it.

Each "pool" is 4 teams. You play every other team in your pool, and the top 2/4 advance into a single elimination tournament. The top teams are determined as follows:

# Points (Win = 3, Tie = 1, Loss = 0)
Goal Differential (# scored minus # allowed)
# Goals scored
# Goals scored against
Coin Toss

Going into today, the US had 2 points, since they had tied England and Slovenia. England also had 2 points (2 ties), Slovenia had 4 points (win/tie) and Algeria had 1 (Loss/tie). We were playing Algeria, and England was playing Slovenia. In order to be in the top 2, we needed one of the following situations to occur:

1) The US won (This would have given us 5 points. Since only England OR Slovenia could get more than that, we would be guaranteed to go on)
2) The US tied, and Slovenia won (This would give us 3 points, and Slovenia 7 points, but England and Algeria would have 2 each)
3) The US tied, and England/Slovenia tied. Slovenia would have taken the pool, and England/US would be tied at 3 points each. It would have boiled down to # of goals, since 3 ties means there would be a net 0 goal differential for both teams.

Because we won, the pool ended up like this:

1) US - 5 points
2) England - 5 points
3) Slovenia - 4 points
4) Algeria - 1 point

Since the US and England both have 5 points, you have to go to the next item in the list - goal differential. Both are +1. Next, goals scored. The US scored 4, and England only scored 2. Therefore, the US won the group, and England is second.

Now it gets simple. A 16 team single elimination tournament is seeded where the #1 from Group A plays the #2 from Group B, and #2 from A plays #1 from B. Winners advance, losers go home.

I LOVE WORLD CUP!

(PS - Go Germany!)

Oooh crap, you are right! How could I forget?! Germany is "my" team! Michael Ballack...pffft! We can do it without him anytime! ;)

Eh, not really. That's why I don't like soccer. I don't get when you get red cards, yellow cards, green cards, multi colored cards, and whatever other colors they want to make up. I don't get why they allow players to fake injuries. I don't get a lot of the blatantly wrong calls they make. None of it makes any sense.

You have not won, nor do I think you guys will. But soccer does suck majorly. Especially when you live in the host country!

On a side note, the vuvzelas are fun, except at 3am!

You don't have to like it, but don't make up crap to justify your opinion.

Red card = flagrant foul. Intentionally harming another player, intentional handball to stop a goal, etc
Yellow card = less severe. Rough housing to get the tackle, slide tackling and missing the ball, handball that wasn't blocking a goal, etc

There are no other color cards. 2 yellows = red, and red = you miss the rest of the game (and the next one).

You aren't allowed to fake injuries. I've seen several yellows given out this tournament for faking injuries, or over-exaggerating falls. Sure, some of them get by (they do the same nonsense in basketball!) but the refs are only human.

There have been several really bad calls this cup--but that's part of the game. There are no instant replays, no people in the upper box making the calls...it's human error, and it's bound to happen. Personally, I really enjoy the fact that there's no stopping every 5 minutes to argue over calls. Once the ref blows his whistle, that's it!

It was tongue in cheek. I thought the green and multicolored card bit would give it away. Evidently no.

There's tons of people just randomly falling down trying to act injured and get the other team carded (or whatever the penalty is). It's all over the internet.

If you want one, like really, I can post you one. They are cheap as chips.
Oooh....And just how much is the 'post' part of that?

I played in high school and each of my kids have played. I can't stand the sport, though and won't/don't watch it on TV. I'm glad that so many people enjoy it and get into it, though. We need more reasons to cheer.
