It's funny several mention GSDs. I don't know anyone now who has one but the ones I have known were either sweet as they come or nasty as they come. In Tosca's advanced training class there were two. One was very well behaved and the other one went after every dog in the room including Tosca, who asked for it because I was dumb enough to let her. The one thing I noticed though was that the owner of the well behaved one had really good control over the dog and the dog seemed to totally respond to her. The other one was on the other end of a leash held by a real boob who didn't seem to have any relationship with the dog at all. Little eye contact, very little Good Boy or positive encouragement going on. Tosca was the younger dog in the room and these two shepards were about a year old, and I thought Whoa, I am not going to let Tosca Rule like this guy is doing with his shepard. I felt in this case, it was more the owner than the breed. I would imagine, though, that since GSDs are so popular, God only knows who is breeding them and how. It's what happens when a dog gets popular, as we all know. I can't imagine why anyone would buy a dog with the potential of a shepard and not pay attention to who is breeding the dog they are getting--and then not pay attention to good training besides. Very stupid. I got charged by a white GSD when I was coming out of an office building a few years ago. The brain dead owners had him off leash and were just yelling. Fortunately, the dog decided not to eat me, for some odd reason and just turned around and left me. I had the distinct feeling it was his decision, not the two idiots who were screaming at him.
I am a bite paranoid because I know that Tosca is a herder and likes to round up kids and nip in the butt and things when she plays. So I am extremely careful whose kids I let play with her and in what way. You all know how a Collie has no qualms about taking chase at a running kid. Fun Fun Fun! for her. Even that kind of nip can be taken seriously by someone who would see it as a bite, not to mention the chase. She certainly keeps MY butt and the cats' butts moving in the house when she's frisky, let me tell you. But she has a huge affinity for kids and they have one for her--and I have to watch it all the time. So I have learned that when somebody says Ohhhhh What a cute dog and Tosca responds happily, I am not going to let much happen beyond a head pet. I just don't trust the judgement of others around my dog. Those who know who Lassie was, automatically think Tosca knows what Lassie knew. That's a real cross.
