This morning Lovie starting vomiting non stop about 8 times at home, then twice in the car. After talking to the vet we figured out that she might of eaten one of the "lawn" mushrooms that are in our yard. They feed off of "Tree stumps, old mulch and animal waste".. It's the only thing we can figure out that she would of gotten into out of the ordinary.

I try to pull them up when I see them but guess I missed one. We'll comes to find out they are poisioness, some types.

I made a 2pm appt for her to just be checked out and bring a sample of the shroom in but when I pulled her out from under the bed asleep, she was soaked in sweat! Off to the vet we go.

They are keeping her there to administer IV fluids & do toxicology blood work.

If she does test positive for toxins, that has to be it.

Just wanted to inform all of us pet lovers and owners-Make sure the lawn mushrooms are pulled up out of your yard.

We'll we are home finally. Lovie received IV fluids, CBC, Electrolytes, GHP, Famotidine Injection for dirrhea, Anzemet injection for anti-nausea, Metronidazole pills to be taken for 5 days at home, RC K-9 Low fat RX canned food till Monday (limited per day too)

Her ALT (see below) liver enzyme was elevated to 120 (normal range for her is 10-100). Her AMYL was low at 451 (normal range for her is 500-1500). Everything else was normal. What this means is either yes she ate something that was toxic but didn't eat enough of it to boost her bloodwork to TOXIC level, but high enough for medical concern and treatment. OR.... She could have a GI issue that we don't know yet. Sooooo we are on major restriction at home and if she's not back to normal self by monday we will be getting more blood work to test the enzymes again and if still elevated and low level she will be tested for GI issues.

As I was waiting at the vet I was looking at the board of all the "toxic things for pets". Gum is on there and she has found a pack or 2 in my purse and ate that but not recently. No candy but yes gum. Not sure about any other items but I do feed her table scraps. NO MORE I can assure you!

Information about the liver enzyme tests:
ALT (alanine aminotransferase)is a liver specific enzyme. It is concentrated in the cytosol and is released when localized liver cells die from infection or due to the interruption of blood supply. Serum levels increase two to three days after the liver has been affected and return to normal after a couple of weeks of treatment. ALT levels may go up four to five times the normal level even in non-hepatic disorders like inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, hemolytic anemia, and heart failure.ALT- Alanine Aminotransferase is also a liver value but is only found in the liver so it is more reliable to depend on for liver information. Increased values often mean recent liver damage but lower values can be normal in younger pets but mean severe liver damage in older pets

AMYL-Amylase is an enzyme produced by the pancreatic. If elevated can be signs of inflammation of the pancreas although these levels do not have to be high to diagnose this problem. Low levels can indicate liver disease, infection or certain tumors. ...

This scares me! Any thoughts?

I am glad she is doing better. Shih Tzus are the best. You are both in my thoughts.

Day 2. Lovie is doing alot better but that is probably b/c of the IV fluids and meds. I am really hoping it was something she ate but she will have the bloodwork/Liver enzymes retested and we'll go from there if they are still not at a normal range.

Thank you for all the well wishes.

You know I did alot of reading tonight on the internet and when I googled, "What would make my dog's liver enzymes elevate"... it kept taking me to problems with EVO food. Lovie is on Evo dry kibble and Innova can. She gets about 3 tablespoons of can a day and about 1/2 a cup of Evo, low cal.

However she is on her 3 small bag so we didn't just start with this food.

Does anyone know if what I'm reading about Evo increases liver enzymes or is it just a fluke?
