Jazz's litter was done at 2 days old. The only time I have ever heard of them docking a older dog was when they get the ears done if their tails are too lon for the show ring.

When I worked for a vet, we did some tail amputations - but only for health reasons, not to feed some person's vanity.

We did dock tails on 3-4 day old pups too. Even on those pups, they showed signs of pain (squealing, whimpering, squirming to get away). But at least they healed very quickly.

Tail docking on an older puppy is much worse. Regardless of how quickly they may SEEM to bounce back, there is a level of pain there. You can't cut through muscles and tendons and take off sections of bone without pain. In addition, many of these types of surgeries are hard to keep clean and many become infected. To do that to something you supposedly are going to LOVE just escapes me. Where's the love when you feel you have to change the look to fit your own idea of "perfect"? That's not love. That's vanity.

When a person's dog gets old and isn't so pretty, will they just get rid of it because it doesn't look like what they think it should look like? Let's say it loses an ear or a leg .. is that dog no longer loved because it's not aesthetically pleasing anymore? I just can't understand the concept of having to put your dog through surgery or taking off pieces for non-health reasons just because you want your dog to look different
Who the hell are you to imply that Dobiegurl should not have docked her pup's tail.

For all you know she might want to show it sometime since it's a purebred.

Tail docking and abuse are MUCH different.

Maybe she wanted to compete in Shutzhund or another sport and wanted to have it's tail done for that?

At least she took it to the vet, its no like she took a butcher's knife and cut it off.

Did you notice how they started screeming BEFORE you docked their tails? Right after they left mom in fact. The squirmed when they were held down BEFORE they docked their tails. Not to mention they quiet right down once they are back with mom.

*chuckles* .. I just stated MY opinion, like others state their opinions. I'm guessing I hit some nerves (guilty feelings, perhaps?) by the reactions I'm seeing.

Nope, not at all. The puppies made a little noise and squirmed a tiny bit beforehand, but when that blade cut through the tail they SCREAMED and fought as well as they could for being 3-4 days old. And while they did quiet some, they continued to whimper even when back with their dam.

I helped with hundreds of tail dockings and NO one can tell me that those puppies don't feel pain - and pretty intense pain at that.

Thank you for standing up for me, I can't stand when peple judge me without knowing me. I have known people who take a rubberband and tie it really tightly around the dogs tail until it falls off. I am not talking about little 3 day old puppies I'm talkinig about puppies who are already months even years old. That is wrong and abusive, but having my dog's tail docked by a professional is not wrong.

As for you miss thing, I'm bout to go black on your trifling a**. I already said I don't feel guilty about anything. You can state your opinion but just because your a** doesn't believe in something doesn't give you the right to call me a bad person. I am so sick and tired of trifling heffas like you trying to judge me. Just because everything does not revolve around your little concepts of life doesn't mean there wrong. I don't know who the f*** you think you are but you sure as hell ain't God. Why do people judge when they know d*** well they ain't perfect? I did what I did and its over and I plan on docking and cropping all the Dobermans I get in the future. So find someone else to harass, b****, cause you ain't gonna change my opinion or make me feel guilty.
Reppin' the 313, holla at cha girl!!!

What would I be guilty. Yes I was part of cutting the tail off of a little, cute puppy just so I coul show it.

Thats the breed standard. I am thinking of doing shutzhund and other sports with my dog as well as showing.

I am not guilty and I fully admit that I dock the tail of dobermans and will have docked dogs as long as I am in the breed.

Get off you high horse and come down to reality. I used to have respect for you but now I think you are nothing but an arogent bitch, who thinks she is better than everyone else because she "works in a vet's office" and doesnt condone tail docking, or ear croping.

Did you ever take your head out of your A** long enough to think maybe it was done for a reason?

*ROTFL*

C'mon, girls, no need to get so upset! I have a right to say that I think docking a tail for vanity reasons is wrong. You don't HAVE to respond to my opinion, that's entirely YOUR choice. I didn't like docking tails on tiny puppies, although I could understand that a LOT more than cutting off the tail of an older puppy or an adult. And that's what this thread has been about - the original poster was upset because her stepmom wanted to chop the tail and ears of a older pup. You chose to defend those actions, and I chose to debate that.

I know that I'm not going to stop YOU from cutting off your dog's tail and ears .. that's what you want to do because you like the looks. I'm glad you don't think they should have fewer teeth or maybe tighter skin too. See, it COULD be worse!

As for you miss thing, I'm bout to go black on your trifling a**.
Wow, am I supposed to be scared or impressed? Sorry, going "gangsta" only makes you look bad - oh, and fake too .. *truly laughing here*

Just take my opinion as what it is - MY opinion. If it really doesn't matter to you, then ignore it! Geez. This IS just a chat forum. Get a grip and learn a little about life.

How am I fake? Thats how I am, I was just trying to be respectful on this forum until some stupid a** like you came along. I'm tired of being all nice, the real me is coming out, b****** so watch out. I don't know why I tried to be all nice cause it don't work. I've sugarcoated everything I've written on this forum but not anymore. Now I'm gonna tell it how it is, I'm tried of heffas like you trying to step up to me, I ain't having it.
So you trying to say everyone from Detroit is fake because of the way they talk? Go ahead and laugh, I don't give a f***. I really don't give a f*** what that makes me look like, cause I could really care less what you B****** think of me.

What for being me? If everyone can have their own opinion why can't I say I thinks she's a trifling little heffa who's getting on my nerves. If she has a right to say whatever she wants then so can I. And if you guys have a problem with how I write, oh well get over it!!! I'm tired of trying to always please people. I'm gonna speak my mind so get used to it.

Not really sure which side to take in regards cropping and docking dogs.

Over here in the UK the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeoons considers docking of dogs` tails to be an unjustified mutilation and unethical unless done for therapeutic or acceptable prophylactic reasons.

I came across the Council of Docked Breeds have produced a short video showing eight puppies of two days old being docked in the presence of their dam.

You know what gets to me is that you think you are so much better that ne because you dock the tails when the pups are 3 day old. Well, guess what? Docking is Docking and you are no better than me because no matter how you put it you're still taking the dogs tail off.
