I don't live there so I don't have much say and my dad doesent really seem to interested in what I have to say period. The puppy is a mutt why does he need his tail docked? Oh because of the rottie in him my stepmom says thats how he should be!!! .

I am so mad!!! I even told my dad that docking and croping is illegal in some parts of the world. But he doesent care he'll let her do whatever she wants! RAH so DUMB!!!!!!

I think it's cruel to dock a puppy's tail at that age. I'm surprised she was even able to find a vet who would do it for $80. I thought that after 3 days of age, the pup must go under full surgery anesthesia or something like that.

Tell your stepmom this: he's never, ever going to look like a pure rottie. Therefore, he's just going to look funky and silly with a docked tail.

Tell your mom that the dog may look more like a GSD and will look stupid with a docked tail.

I have seen pups get their tails docked at that age but it is not a good idea. They do go under full anesthesia. It is a VERY painful surgery, and there is a good deal of post op pain and risk of local infection because of the area. They always bump that area as they sit down, and it always gets fecal matter in the incision site and it is a horrible place to try to keep a bandage on.
Sorry I guess you know that.
I hope the forwarded information helps change her mind. It's not a very nice thing to do at that age. I really don't see why she would bother. I am sure the pup will be beautiful just the way he is.
Tell her the site will be very hard to keep a bandage on and it will bleed all around the house. Maybe that will change her mind.

Tell her you got a rusty butter knife and want to dock something on her..(too make her more "pretty.")

That is gross and selfish..... sorry, I was blunt, but I can't stand stupid people.

Better yet, print out this thread and throw it at her......

how old is the pup? I would report that vet
Report the vet for what? Its a surgery procedure just like any other surgery. You can't get the vet in trouble for that. When I got my puppy he had a tail but I decided to dock it because he is a purebred doberman and I wanted him to look like a standard Doberman. They do have to put the dog under but I had his tail amputated at the same time he had his ears cropped. Yes I did it for cosmetic reasons only but that was my choice and have never felt guilty about it. He was 12 weeks old and when he came home he was more playful than ever. Some dogs do experience severe pain but then there are others who don't care like my dog. He sat on it, ran into the wall with his stub and not one time did he whine or cry. He had pain mediction but I rarely used it. I don't know what this mutt looks like but if it doesn't look like a real rott, the docked tail is going to look foolish. When he had his ears taped up and bandage on his tail people always had something to say, but guess what? I don't care what anyone has to say and I had to put a few people in there place.

When I worked for a vet, we did some tail amputations - but only for health reasons, not to feed some person's vanity.

We did dock tails on 3-4 day old pups too. Even on those pups, they showed signs of pain (squealing, whimpering, squirming to get away). But at least they healed very quickly.

Tail docking on an older puppy is much worse. Regardless of how quickly they may SEEM to bounce back, there is a level of pain there. You can't cut through muscles and tendons and take off sections of bone without pain. In addition, many of these types of surgeries are hard to keep clean and many become infected. To do that to something you supposedly are going to LOVE just escapes me. Where's the love when you feel you have to change the look to fit your own idea of "perfect"? That's not love. That's vanity.

When a person's dog gets old and isn't so pretty, will they just get rid of it because it doesn't look like what they think it should look like? Let's say it loses an ear or a leg .. is that dog no longer loved because it's not aesthetically pleasing anymore? I just can't understand the concept of having to put your dog through surgery or taking off pieces for non-health reasons just because you want your dog to look different.

PixieSticksandTricks, I hope your stepmom re-thinks this. If docking her pup's tail is that important to her, then she got the puppy for all the wrong reasons.

I never said he didn't occasionally feel pain but not as exagerated as some people make it seem. You can say whatever you want but I chose to get his tail and ears done. There was no infection and it was kept very clean and we took him to the vet every 2 days for about 2 weeks to keep an eye on the tail. I will never get rid of my dog. In dog shows all those people are looking at the dogs looks to make out the "perfect" dog of that breed. The dog world is totally superficial. I really don't care what people have to say about it but thats what I chose to do. You can do as you please with your dog why can't i? And no one asked you to undestand anything. I did it for my reasons and I do not have to explain anything to you or anybody else.

And yet you go on and on about it. You say the dog world is totally superficial - well, yes, to superficial people. There is a LOT of the dog world that is not.

Ahh, given this logic anyone should be able to abuse a dog with no repercussions. I'm sure those that have puppymills feel the same way. After all, they OWN the dogs so it's okay if they breed them every heat cycle, kick them when they walk by, or chop off their tails or cut up their ears.

After all, dogs are JUST a possession, right?

The ONLY reason to dock a tail and crop ears on an older pup or adult dog (short of injury) is for the vanity of the person. I'm sure that the dog would have preferred not to have his tail and ears cut up. Yes, you have your reasons. Just be honest about them.

Dogs have an amazing ability to forgive humans even though the humans do things for the wrong reasons.

As always, my personal opinion. I do hope that the original poster can talk her stepmom out of putting that poor puppy through unneccesary surgery, just to feed her own misguided ego.

I said from the beginning I did it for cosmetic reasons only. So how is that not honest?

I don't know who the hell you think you are. You know nothing about me or my life. When did I say he was only a pocession? I believe that a dog gives you companionship and protection and in return we give then shelter and food. I do everything with my dog and he is WAY more than just a pocession. How dare you even say that. As I mentioned before you don't know me.
