Is this for real?

"Pits" just bite?

I've owned "pits", or more accurately American Pit Bull Terriers, for 13 years and have NEVER had one even so much as attempt to bite someone much less actually make contact. So quit eating the media bullshit. I hear it tastes nasty anyway.

And A, I'm sorry that happened. Honestly, I would've shot them. Those dogs don't need to go back to their owner even if they were the nicest dogs in the world. An irresponsible owners does not need a dog. Period.

But I'm kind of shocked at your statement. We don't "wonder" why "pit bulls" have a bad rep. But it sure isn't because they are vicious, bloodthirsty creatures and that will break into your home in the middle of the day or night and kill you.......like your post implies. We know it is because irresponsible people own them and refuse to obey leash laws and containment laws and bring them to dog parks and heaven knows what else.

I hope these dogs are captured. For everyone's sake.

Good post, Mia. :) I was trying to get to that in my post, but didn't do a very good job. :p

There was a big article in my newspaper recently with pit owners up in arms and "I don't understand why they hate them" - hence the comment. I make no apologies for that comment either. While we know there can be good dogs (oh I don't see any of you quoting where I said I KNOW they're not all bad - way to look at the negative guys) a LOT of them are nasty bastards.

But hey, whatever, you guys can defend their actions if you'd like. Like I told animal control today, if I see them again, I'm shooting them. She told me "go ahead, it's within your right". These dogs won't get a chance at rehab or to go to a rescue if i see them again, the one is getting a 1 way ticket to a hollow point.

As for leaving my door open, I have to leave it open all summer or it gets hotter than hell in my house. I do NOT have air conditioning or a cooler, so fresh air is the only way to cool things down. It's the back door to my fenced yard, and I leave my front door open until bedtime trying to cool the house off.
There is absolutely no way for my children to get out that back door and into say, the street. Both my gates are padlocked and maybe my oldest is big enough to get over the fence. Criticise that all you guys want, we know that's all Chaz is good for anymore, but to keep my house reasonably cool, that's what has to be done - even having every window in the house open doesn't help as much as the big door with the fan blowing in cool air.

perhaps a screen door would be a good option.
Its on a fenced in padlocked yard though and its a rental.

Honestly I would leave my door open if it was cool enough but I only have 4 foot chainlink AND its hot as balls outside so yea not doing it here. But we do it at moms and my grandfathers balconey doors are open.

I have a feeling if there was a intruder Lacey and Lestat would make it known.

Ash that had to be scary I hope Matt can get past it and not have nightmares or anything

((((((((((hugs)))))))))

I'm glad this turned out well for you, your family, and your pets. There was a case of this nearby a few years ago that didn't end up as nice and I believe the owners of the pits involved ended up doing jail time over the whole deal. I do hope you called the police.

Im glad you guys are OK. I understand about the no A/C thing.
Thanks guys. We're a bit shook up about it (I mean, imagine the surprise waking up to that, lol) but everyone is fine and no worse for the wear seemingly. I really doubt a screen door is going to even slow ANYTHING that wants in down, let alone stop it. I have a metal screen on the front, but the back door is a sliding glass with a dog door.

When AC finally got here around noon (3.5 hours after I called them) they said they had multiple calls on the same dogs in my neighborhood, but I doubt they were caught.

With the door open, y'all never have a problem with coons? My parents live in the middle of the city, and there are coons that leave prints right on the screen door! I wouldnt doubt they'd help themselves if they though they could come right in and get some dog food!

Romy - She's renting. So unless the landlord would do it, I dont think getting another door would work. You couldnt even say it was a safety thing because they would just say to close the door. Depending on the landlord.

That really is horrifying!!

Though I wouldn't say there are ALOT of aggressive APBTs ( I believe that the majority of them are one of the most people friendly dogs you will ever meet) but that when they are aggressive, they tend to be so over-the-top.
I can say without a doubt I'd rather face two aggressive golden retrievers than one aggressive pit bull.

I don't really agree with that - I've only met a few pitties with nasty temperaments amidst all the amazingly sweet ones. Hell, I know a few hat have come from the worst situations imaginable and are still absolutely bulletproof, people-loving dogs.

This one sounds like it has a screw loose - it's so far from your typical APBT temperament that it's nearly unbelievable. :(

I've worked with at least 15 pitties in the past year...and a hell of a lot of other breeds of dogs. I have never met a pittie who so much as growled at me, and I was grooming, which meant lots of scary tools, scary noises, etc.

If I saw stray dogs on the street, I'd try to grab the pit bull before I tried to grab the husky or the shepherd or the cocker spaniel.

Also, I think what Maura meant by a dog doesn't "try to bite, it just does" is that if a dog is fear aggressive or playing roughly or was never taught manners, they don't WANT to bite, but they will if it's necessary....A dog that wants to bite and is actually an aggressive dog that needs to be shot (ie what I believe the OP dealt with) is going to go through hell and high water to get the job done.

Also, until you know AC has caught the dogs, you might want to put a baby gate up in your back doorway. It will keep the breeze, and it won't stop intruders but at least it might keep the dogs out.

Glad your dogs in their crates sounded the alarm and let you know the intruders were there. You did a good job of getting them out. I can't even leave a window open so the breeze can come in the screens for the raccoons here. I tried that the other night and a raccoon was picking away at it when Victor and Pepper chased it off.

Seriously, the whole situation sucks. I'm really glad you and your family are safe.

Can you guys get a security door where you live? We had them on each door in Tucson, like a screen door, only nothing is getting through without a cutting torch.

These types are what I'm talking about.

That's what I need for my back door so that I can leave it open during the summer. Like Ashley, I don't have AC, but I can't leave a regular screen door open because my dogs will go straight through one  A screen door isn't even an obstacle for them.

Glad everything came out all right in the end Gonzalez........that could have been a horrible tragedy for sure!

And I've wanted one of those on the front AND back door for AGES! For the past 12 years, we've had this type of door on the front, it's a solid sheet of glass like this:

How the kids haven't put their hand through it, broken it by slamming, Orson broken it by jumping on it (he used to when he was younger) or the wind busting it from slinging it open, I will NEVER know..........but the luck can't hold out forever, LOL, so I would LOVE to have a door like in Romy's link. Plus, I think they look pretty too :)

I just don't like the price :p
