Good information Red. I found this link explaining the process of obtaining a "tax exempt" status for non profit orgs

How to Obtain 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Status for Your Nonprofit

If we are seriously going to consider setting up a "Chaz rescue and transport" we should probably look into all details of obtaining the tax exempt status and get organized :)
I think we should look into it. So next time this doesn't have to end the way it did.

Let's try and turn this into as much of a positive as we can. Put us all in the position where we can help the next one. That is, if everyone's up for it.
;)

I'd be interested if we were going to try and organize ourselves as a legitimate transport and rescue group. It would certainly help our efforts.

Agree ! We should be ready with memories of our Binn and Riggin . Maybe even name the rescue with a B & R . Both situations have drained our hearts .!!! Funds could be set up for future rescues . This was done in our Golden Club . A few years ago I wrote our paper about a dog I rescued , Some one read it and said that she was looking for a Christmas present for her Golden lover brother in Arizona and sent in $100 !

I just caught up with all the updated threads. Poor dog. :( I worried this might be the outcome, but I had to hope. RIP, Reggin.

I had hoped for good news. RIP Reggin. I think a fund or whatever is a great idea so we'll be ready next time. I will donate to the fund what I was going to donate for Reggin. A very good cause.

I just wanted to say I think we should really do this. I am not exactly sure how the specifics work or anything like that to get a 501(c)(3), but I do see a lot more than you'd think "just" being a foster home.
With the talented people on here to sell art work, collars, leashes, etc etc and all of the members with such big hearts we could easily have enough $ to save a life.
Heck, if even one dog is saved in my book that's GREAT! Its such a good cause, worthwhile.
It's with a heavy heart I read the posts on the forum tonight. It stings - because it reminds me so much of Binn, and I'm saddened for any loss of life. I know I would donate to prevent it from happening again, and I'm not in much of a position to be donating, if you know what I mean ;)

We could do something in Reggin's honor. I know my heart is broken right now and I feel like I need to do SOMETHING.

I'm not rich by any means, but I can save my pennies. What if all of us saved our pennies for a month, and then cashed them in. That money could go towards whatever we decided to do.

We could call it the Pennies From Heaven drive, in honor of our newest angel.

God, now I'm bawling again. :(

We can gather up (cyber-gather ;) ) our collective efforts and set up an Etsy site :)

What a stupendous idea, Keri!

Jess has the start of a donation website. Maybe a page about this?

I do hope something positive can come from all of this.

I FULLY support the ideas that have been presented for Chaz gaining true status as a rescue. I think we could do a LOT of good through that.

Is this going to be american only? because if it's ever needed i can transport on the island here. not on the mainland without financial help because of the ferry fees. And I can donate a little to the cause now and then.

I'm not sure you want to go for 501c status yet...it's a lot of paperwork, and ironically, kind of costly. The shelter I worked at in high school had been around for 10 years before they went for it. Definitely do your research before you dive into it!

That said, I think the transport idea is great. I will happily volunteer my car/home/time if and when it gets set up.
