This is interesting information. There was a guy joining our group who meet at noon for the dogs to socialize and play, who has a English Mastiff under a year old. He stopped coming around because he had to take the dog to the vet due to scabs forming on its jowls from the dogs grabbing on when playing. He takes the dog with another person and their older dogs to run through the forest and play at least twice a day for a couple of hours each time. He says his dog is good and tired after these walks. He must have no idea the damage he's causing to this dog. One day he actually sat his weight on the dogs hind quarters which shocked all of us.

It's no point in me saying anything to him as he isn't going to listen. He views himself as the expert and loves the dog. He believes he is doing exactly what is required and likes to see the dog exhausted and tired. Hopefully the dog will survive his skewed form of love.

Yea, I see your point Island dog. I guess it's just hard for me to wrap my head around that way of thinking. I'm stubborn but my friends are taking the cake on this one. They're not listening to anyone, and it is their choice. I know they are going to regret it later on. To this day I'm still searching for and/or taking advice from other dog owners. I think you're right though. It's less drama if I just stay out of it.

Angie, maybe you can print this off and give it to your friend. It's a shame that the breeder didn't care enough to even warn of over exertion on the growing joints. I know that you just said in your last post that you would rather avoid the drama, but if this is a dog that you are going to see throughout its life you might want to reconsider. If the breeder didn't discuss proper exercise then I am doubting joints were much concern in their breeding program making it even more vital that this pup is not over exerted.

Or maybe your friend would want to become a member here. This forum can be rough at times, but a wealth of information can be found here.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting how anyone else should handle a similar situation, just saying this guy isn't going to listen to me. I'm not a knowledgeable dog person, just know a lot more now that I have Molly and joined this forum. When he put his weight on the dogs hind quarters and I commented, he laughed it off.

Just like he gets very angry when the dog doesn't come when he calls him and I suggested he practice calling the dog and rewarding him for coming rather than only calling the dog when he wants/needs the dog to return. He has never taken the dog to any classes and expects the dog to know commands and obey. His parents raised Chiuaua's and he has a wonderful little guy who has changed all of our opinions regarding these great little dogs. He believes he doesn't need to do anything different because he says he's doing things the way his parents did.

Basically, he has a closed mind.

Saintgirl, I clicked on the link and it's not working. I was going to suggest this site to them. This forum can be a bit harsh but I think everyone on here wants the best for every animal. I enjoy that kind of passion! Island dog. I didn't explain myself well in my reply:) My wording was wrong. I'm agreeing with what you said that people are closed minded. It's that kind of thinking that I can't wrap my head around. They really need to get on this website! There is so much to learn:)
