I'm just wondering how do you teach a dog not to pull? Mom, my sister, dad, and I were walking. I was holding Liberty's leash. I started trying to have him not pull on the leah because it really hurts my arm. Liberty started pulling really hard and it really hurt my arm. I pulled back to try to get him to stop and Liberty fell and acted like I was hurting him when I barely pulled his leash. Mom started yelling at me and pretty much saying Liberty can do whatever he wants and I can't train him at all because I'm to hard on him. There was another dog and Liberty growls at some other dogs, so I had shortened the leash and was trying to distract him. didn't work and I got lectured for that. I really wish mom would get him to an obediance class to help with this so a trainer can tell us what to do besides telling me that I ccan't train or walk Liberty if I treat him like that. I'm about ready to give up on training him in front of mom. I don't want to do that. Don't see any other options, though. It's really hard to balance mom's methods.

When he passes you to the point he can't see you anymore, turn 180 degrees and walk the other direction. Keep doing this until you see that he is keeping his attention on you at all times.

For my border collie mix, who was a HORRIBLE puller (I'm mean, she would pull no matter what. Walks were her straining at the collar and me trying to keep the leash in my hands), I did the tree method. Whenever the dog pulls, you stop. When they slacken the leash, you start walking again. It's very important to be consistent. Occasionally Tippy will pull if she REALLY wants to go somewhere, but generally she walks nicely. I let her walk either in front of me, at my side, or behind me, as long as she's not pulling. For side-by-side walking what I did is put her by my side, leash behind my back and held in my right hand (dog at my left). When she pulled I stopped and put her back in place and started walking again.

I think you should try to explain to your mom that training a dog to pull (humanely) is not a bad thing. It's not to have a sore arm every time you walk the dog, and you get compliments. People have told me before "your dogs walk so nicely, mine just pulls all the time" and it's really not enjoyable to walk a dog who is pulling, which is why so many people just neglect their dogs' exercise needs.

That sounds like my mom!!! Everytime I correct him she goes off on me, but I've learn to deal with it. And chico knows my mom has a soft spot for him. He only acts dramatic when my mom or grandma are there. He goes all out, whining, throwing himself on the floor, the works.

Riot used to be SUCH a horrible little pull machine.. hes gotten MUCH better now.

What I did was whenever he started to pull, I'd start walking the other way, eventually he got to the point where he was watching my every movement.

Another thing I had tried was just stopping and letting him slack the leash. This didn't work very well for him because he was still focused on what he wanted to go for, which was a head of him... so he kept pulling.

There is a BC in Riots Rally-O class that is a hard puller and she has been using a Halti on her. Its worked WONDERS!! i can really see a difference with her heeling!

Make sure whenever you correct the behaviour you are giving your pup a voice command as well, so they understand what they are doing.

Yeah, I've done the same method and Liberty was fine with just dad. Only acted this way with mom there too.

My trainer used a chain which doesn't choke the dog (infact its a lot looser than a usual collar) but when they start to pull hard you move your wrist and it makes a loudish clinky noise which the dog doesnt like. Mine now walk to heel and will sit when i stop walking... yet if a pheasant or rabbit runs infront of them on the road, they still do lunge at it...

I tried turning 180 degrees while Liberty pulled and it worked. :) He stopped and looked at me like he was asking "What did you do that for?" then we continued walking after he looked back.
