Mrose,
I'm so glad you started this thread, look how people all ready are learning about the plight of the whales!

We all have to pick the causes that we are passionate about, obviously this is one of yours (mine too). Keep up the good work!!

Well my photo is loaded, hope it doesn't crash the greenpeace website, I hate having my photo taken, lol.

I just looked on the website and saw all the photos loaded up and it warmed my heart. Young, old, from all countries across the world it gives me hope when I see so many people still care about the planet and its precious animals.

Does anyone actually have any proof that they want to hunt these whales? I have yet to see an article saying anythig about a planned hunt.

If its in international waters I think they have a right to hunt whales. It's clearly a cultural issue. If they are not breaking any international laws, they have a right to their fishing.
Siemens, it's the fact that Japan is whaling in Australian waters. This is one reason why the matter is so serious.

Australian waters extend 11 miles from their shores not 200 as they claim. And Australia does not own Antarctica.

Saving whales is ridiculous. Why single out whales? Why not save all fish?

because whales are endangered and only breed once every 4 years if it has been a good four year.

Yes, it is where they are planning to do it, and also that they are planning to do more of it - which really makes a joke of the whole 'for scientific reasons.'

I remember in the eighties when the ban was put in place and it seemed such good news, but there is always a loophole.......

This is a clever article and puts it into perspective - it made me smile about such a grim subject. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,15543300-421,00.html

I don't want to get involved in the debate over conservationism, just felt the need to chime in with the fact that whales are not fish, I think the reason they garner so much attention is their rarity and also the fact that they're amazingly intelligent mammals, peple find them much more endearing than an ordinary salmon or other true fish.

yes but pigs are not endangered or on the brink of being such......some countries eat dog and i think the majority of people on this site would say dogs are intelligent and people are against this but they arent endangered so should we only be against things being killed that we can treat as a pet????

ie some kids have pet pigs/sheep/dogs/cat/rat/cow etc should we be against the killing of all animals and everyone become vegetarians and take supplements.

also i think the main problem with the killing of whales is the excuse of "for scientific reasons" = wouldnt science be betta off if we study animals while they were alive and not dead - what do we learn from a dead animal - that it no longer breathes?????
