Well I just got off the phone with the local planned parenthood.......

They said the HIGHEST price is $100 and that INCLUDES the exam and 3 months worth of BC, even the shot. The price goes down depending on her need of the exam there or not. So that is good to know!

And Cali, LOL, I've never been on birth control in my entire life! Never discussed it with a doctor, and never used anything besides a condom and now of course a hysterectomy, LOL So I am not familiar with ANYTHING having to do with BC, hahaha

Generally I just add it on to my yearly physical. They check my blood pressure and basic stuff, give me an exam down there, and write the script for BC that I take to CVS. Free, because it's all preventative care.

I just wanted to chime in and tell you to be careful about the depo shot. Although it is nice to not have a period, there are extreme and pretty awful side affects. After 9 months my hair was falling out, I was lactating, had gained 40lbs, blood pressure through the roof, and had terrible headaches. Those are all normal side effects. Weight gain for some has been as extreme as 80lbs in just three months! After I decided to stop using depo, it took 6 months for my period to come back and it still isn't regular. It takes up to two years for some. I was always sick for a couple days after getting it - and after I stopped the injection sites that were used (both my hips) were itchy and inflamed.

Depo does work for some people and is considered one of the most effective methods, however just read up on it before you decide. I'm not anti-depo I just went through a hard time with it, and after reading up on it I realized I was one of many. It is you and your daughter's choice about what works best.

I second this. It is also VERY common to get osteoporosis. Even in your 20s. That happened to my friend after she had been on it for like 5 years. The risk goes up after 3 yrs and from what I understand doctors aren't supposed to let people be on it longer than that.

I don't know much about the shot. I just remember a sign at my OB's stating that it should only be used when absolutely necessary

Yup careful with the depo shot! my mom got osteoperosis!

My BC (Yaz) is about $30/month.. Its partly covered by my health insurance so are my visits to my gyno

Ive heard that planned parenthood does it by income or something, I have had friends that say that they have no insurance so their parents don't find out and they pay about $15 a month

Oh wow, see, another reason I am happy to have you all! I had no clue..........I knew a *possible* side effect was weight gain, she is a size ZERO so I figured that wouldn't be too bad, LOL but the rest of that stuff doesn't sound too good!

Perhaps with my help, she can get into a habit of taking her BC pill every morning.

EDIT: And yes, Planned Parenthood does go by income.........but I'm afraid our income would be too high to qualify for much if any help, so I asked (when I called a bit ago) what was the highest scale they offer and that was the $100 price she told me :)

Coop, I've been on depo for six years before, went off it to try and find something else, and now I'm back on it. My doctor never had any problems keeping me on it and had no problems putting me back on it again indefinitely.
NO birth control will actually make you gain weight. What it CAN do is increase your appetite. But overeating as a result of the increased appetite is the cause of the weight gain, NOT the birth control itself.

Because she is a size zero she definitely needs to take calcium supplements while on it. I take OS-Cal twice a day. The bone loss that people experience is a result of not taking calcium supplements on it. Studies have shown the bone loss is completely reversible once you go off the depo.

However she does need to be fully aware of all the side-effects before deciding to go on it. Yes, it's cool that you don't have to take a pill every day, but it comes with it's own special brand of side-effects outside of the norm for birth control ("weight gain," mood changes/depression, and hair growth or loss are common among all BC.) I spotted constantly for the first year and so did a friend of mine. It can definitely screw with your reproductive system and it's not uncommon for people to be unfertile for a year or more after going off it. If she wants kids in the future I would honestly recommend looking at something else. She could try Nuvaring... didn't work out for me (actually is the worst birth control I've ever tried) but I know lots of people who love it.
Also, I know two different people who conceived while on depo. One of them conceived TWICE while on it; she ended up with two happy, healthy children while the other ended up with her body causing her to violently abort the baby.

yeah I didn't like depo either. I essentially had a full blown period for over a year with no signs of stopping. It would stop for a bit but as soon as I strained at all like a cough or sneeze or lifting something... period would start right then and there.

Nuvaring is an idea. she should ask about that one just to get some input.

The one I went to in my younger days went by income as well. They also never asked if I lived with my parents, so they went by my income..not household income.

I had the same issue as above on the depo shot. I only had the shot once, yet had issues for months after it should have been free of having any effects.

Just wanted to chime in here, my daughters pediatrician just wrote her a prescription for the pill, i assume if she had wanted the depo shot, he would have just given it to her at his office. She's 19 now so goes to a regular Dr, her co-pay is $10. a month, if she had no inusrance she would have to pay $40. a month.

Have her ask about the IUD. I know it hasn't been super popular with some of the women here on Chaz, but I had a chance to talk to several gynocologists who work in a low-income clinic, and they were using Mirena in a lot of their teenage girls. They (the drs) all thought it was wonderful (and used it themselves). Your daughter could also try the copper IUD if she doesn't want a hormonal device.

I don't know whether PP offers that though. {And, btw, how awesome that they have provided low cost BC for so many women here!}

I used the Mirena and even though I had them take it out, I honestly really liked it. I wish it would have worked out for me better. But she said her daughter didn't want anything injected, so that, the copper IUD, and Implanon are all out. I had looked into Implanon, too and was seriously interested in it, but since I'd already taken an expensive risk with Mirena and had it not work out, I decided not to take another expensive risk with Implanon and have THAT not work out too... =<

I just want to say that I think it is awesome that you are providing a safe environment for your daughter to come to you in order to keep her safe and prevent her from becoming another statistic, aka teen mom. :hail::hail:

I wish more moms would be like this and educate their children about safe sex instead of shutting their eyes in the belief that their precious will not have sex until they are married (not that there is anything wrong with it if you choose to do so, but in reality, most adolescents do not).

I'm currently on depo myself, and haven't had ANY period at all. I AM hungrier, but they warned me about that, and I'm underweight anyway, so a few pound definitely wouldn't kill me.

I DID have a serious headache and was very irrational the first week they gave it to me. And they REALLY prefer to give it during the first five days of your period. My gyno wouldn't give me the shot until I started my period. I paid a copay of 20 dollars and my insurance covers the rest.

I probably wont be on depo for more than a few years, and then I'll either switch to Implanon or a IUD. I make sure to get a lot of calcium in my diet as well, and need to start taking a supplement.

im an almost 8 year veteran of deppo
and in all honesty there couldnt be a better method of bc for me...

calcium with D is a must, especially if shes planning on long terming it, the rishs of bone density loss increases exponentially after 2 years.

NO birth control MAKES you gain weight, though it can increase your apitite and make it harder to LOOSE weight. for those lucky enough to have fast metabolism it can "play" with that making it "easier" to gain weight. As long as your carefull about what your eating...

it can play havoc with moods, especially around the time your due/just after a shot
pesonally i get 3 days of blahs before the shot and for about 2 days after i find myself being a tad tearfull.
being bipolar already however we dont know if that effects it.

i havent had any hair loss or strange growth being on it, though there is a possibility of that.

in terms of bleeding. i spotted on and off for the first 3 months, id find it triggered if i was stressing/nervous over something, however that stoped on my second shot and i havent had a period or sotting since. *touch wood*

it can lay havok on a sex drive, personally i didnt notice a change but a friend of mine just got off it because she claims its making her gain wiehgt (food makes you gain...deppo just makes it easier) and it "killed" her sex drive...though shes also working a full time and 2 part time jobs and is always tired...so who knows.

no smoking on the deppo, clots are a risk if you have any birthcontrol and smoke.

ive never heard of anyone lactating because of the shot before now, while im sure its a potential side effect id like to say i think its a are one.

there are other options for her to look into as well.
the patch, stick it on for 3 weeks pull it off, have a period, stick a new one on.
and nuvaring might both be worth looking into.

most drs wont do the IUD unless youve had a child.

Thanks Jules :) Kevin and I have talked openly about sex, std's, their future, and birth control with them since they were about 12-13 years old, (the boys too) LOL.........if you asked them, they'd probably tell you they are sick of hearing about it! hahaha

Kevin and I both 'messed up' having a child too young and we want better for our children. I see kids having kids all around me, and while that's not the worst thing they could do or have happen, it sure puts a burden and stress on their lives :( My 17 year old niece had a baby last summer. Her mother was open, honest, and she WAS on birth control.......(antibiotics killed the BC I guess)

I thank all of you for all the good input you took the time to share. Her appointment is set for the 27, and we will be reading up on the various forms of BC a bit more before we go in :)

That's my situation excluding only being a year older and I obviously haven't had the munchkin yet. I was doubling up on BC and yet, here I am 5 months pregnant.

Has she considered the patch? I

I'm another one who's not to fond of the shot. I know one girl who died (blood clot, following all the proper procedures, not smoking, ect...) and at least 3 who've gotten pregnant on the shot. If she has trouble remembering to take pills and she has a cell phone, set the alarm for the same time every day. This is what I've been doing for the past 5 1/2 years and it's served me well, lol. They also make pill packs that have little reminder alarms on them.

I don't know about PP but I can highly recommend the Nuvaring. I've been on it for two years and haven't had any side effects. I never had huge problems with my period before but now I almost never cramp and my period only lasts about four days. The other bcs didn't work for me, in pill form I would never remember to take it, the patch made me horrifically naseous and itchy, and I've heard many horror stories about depo. On the nuvaring I just set my cell phone calendar to alert me when I need to take it out and then set a new alert to tell me to refill the prescription. It's working pretty well, if she can get into a system with it she might like it. :D
