Bella finally went out the doggy door... not once but twice! We're finally fast on our way to being housebroken (and not freezing by having to leave the door open on rainy/cold days!)

Back-story: She's been afraid of the doggy door ever since she god here because the boyz (meanie heads) would run through with reckless abandon and the flap would smack her in the nose. I got her to go in the doggy door two days ago (she wanted INSIDE badly enough), but she wouldn't go out to save her life. So her finally going in and out the doggy door is

Yay!

Yeah Bella! So happy she finally has started going in and out by herself. So how many times did you have to climb through to show her how it's done? I imagine that's the only way I would be able to get my dogs to go through one of those.

well she got pushed through a couple of times. Once I left her outside for over an hour until she finally gave up and came in (after that she would come in whenever she wanted... very frustrating when she'd not pee outside, then come in to pee inside... ugh...

To show her that it worked the same going out as in I set her in front of it, nose touching, and waited her out -- didn't let her sit, or turn around, she had to go forward, period, she went out then but I dont consider that a success (she didnt have a choice)

And she also sees the boyz go in and out all day long... luckily Banzai uses the doggy door half the time even when the rest of the door is open (we have a sliding glass insert) So she gets a visual reinforcement on the idea that its safe AND fun.

Oh, and the fact that when she went in or out on her own she got a whole fistful of training treats, and pets, and cuddles, and goood girls, and scruffies. I made darn sure she knew that I was very very very pleased by what she just did :)

Next hurdle is to see her go outside by herself specifically to piddles. That will be exciting. Probably happen within the next 3 days I would guess.

I've found that the best way of teaching a dog, especially a stubborn one, is to commit before ever starting the session to taking the time, no matter how long it takes.

I waited bella out over an hour making her come in through the door. she was shivering, and pawing, and looking SOOOOOO sad, and barking, and making these almost howling sounds... and I waited... and waited... and waited... and waited... but I was there with the treats and lovins the moment she came through

I waited almost half an hour to get her to go out the first time (the non "success" time). she'd push right. I'd block. She'd push left. I'd block. She'd sit. I'd lift her hind quarters back to standing. She finally went out and came right back in. Lovins and treats and freedom.

And while bella is not stubborn, per se, she's SMART. So I have to teach her that when she does what daddy wants daddy does what she wants. She's learning how we can deal. She gives, I give.

I realized with buddy a long time ago that dominance is not a parasitic relationship. Buddy doesn't (and shouldn't) serve hand and foot. Buddy gives because he knows that whenever possible I'll give back. and he knows that when I don't give it's just got to be that way (for whatever reason daddy sees.)

I probably had it lucky, getting buddy and then banzai first. Buddy is wicked smart and dominant. So we had to learn to deal with that. Banzai is forever patient and stubborn. So we had to learn to deal with that.

Of course for those very reasons I treat the dogs a bit differently. I'm harder on buddy than banzai, because buddy (if given too much room) will take over. And I'm softer on banzai because banzai just doesn't push the boundaries like buddy does, so I don't have occasion to push back as often.

I expect bella will be more sophisticated in the give-and-take than buddy, and more insidious with the patience. But we've had good practice.

Oh. And when the time comes... daddy "barks" with the best of them. (not literally, but I can be very forceful -- and loud -- when I need to be)

When Bella was reacting poorly to her vaccinations. I "barked" at banzai and he ran upstairs and jumped into moms arms. I simply needed some non interference while bella was dealing with a really bad diarrhea night. And I got it.

Afterwards banzai came down, and we made up (puppy kisses, and pets, and snuffles). He hasn't once acted fearful because of the incident because of my normal behavior. This wasn't normal, something was different, and banzai just submitted that dad had to do what he had to do, and that it wasn't personal.

I like to think that I have a strong hand, backed by a soft heart. And I think thats why almost every dog I've ever met has responded well to me.

Wow... I just got WAAAAY off topic

Geez, do you want a cookie or something? ;)

Seriously though, huzzah and yay for all five of you! That is such a good doggie home it sounds like...Virgo is jealous of Bella for "taking" her place. :p

YAY BELLA!

sometimes when Milo does something really really good, i'll do a dance with him. Dunno if you're up for that but it sure gets Milo excited.

and a song to go with it would be something like " BELLA WENT THROUGH THE DOGGY DOOR, THE DOGGY DOOR, THE DOGGY DOOR, and I AM SO SO PROUD OF HER, PROUD OF HER, PROUD OF HER..." etc.

wow we are crazy dog people.

Milo's favorite thing in the world is when a human gets down on all fours and he can jump on them.

Cant really wrestle with the dogs... buddy gets involved and he hasn't been able to control his jaw strength for a long time. Even with gloves he compresses so much it hurts.

I get down with bella dne she runs around and wags her but all over and pushes against me and ruls over and hops over my legs and licks my face and tried to nibble my ears and my nose (and then does the whole thing all over again and again until she calms down) then she pushes up against me one last time so her whole back is pressing against me and falls asleep.

Tres cute
