i think all dogs have jobs. even if it as simple as looking out for you. or making you feel better, therapy dogs right?

i believe buster has numerous jobs.

he is my protecter, my best friend and my training/excercise buddy. everydog works hard, just depends on what they do. some dogs work extremley hard making their owners proud, other work hard weight pulling, some work hard in herding, agility or flyball. others work hard in making their owners work hard on them. it really depends as what is defined as "work"

is it not a job if you run your own business? just because its not typical "work" but some sort you've come up with yourself?

OMG! :yikes: This thread got so many responses. I wasn't offended by what OC claimed  I have a "working" breed and a tough one at that. He fetches his ball, licks his balls, hikes, runs, walks 5 miles everyday with his master (ME) and on occassion gets to herd some stupid geese at the pond we walk I thought the comment was a little tiny bit offensive ;) But my dog lives in my house not in a run/kennel outdoors and sleeps in a nice warm bed every night and is constantly catered to. Oh, and he is also an AWESOME guard dog on my property which is a job.........So, my boy is far from a lawn ornament, they have to live outside in a run or on a chain to be a lawn ornament.
NO No NO....it doesnt count if its a "working breed" it only counts if it works

Now that the joint has quieted down some...........hehehehe

When I first saw that statement in her siggie my eyes bulged a little, because I didn't think I read it right. After re-reading it I was offended for about 5 seconds.............It's a sad thing when someone feels the need to put others down in order to feel good about themselves.

My thoughts exactly.

Carry on with the hijacking now. :)

I doubt OC was thinking it would offend anyone.

I doubt she was doing it to make herself feel better either.

I DO remember reading it and thinking... What a load of bollox. I still think that.

Personally, I don't see agility, sledding, flyball, weight pull dogs as WORKING dogs.

I 100% agree with Gempress that if those dogs disappeared, we wouldn't be swamped with balls that needed moving, or heavy things that needed pulling... It's a hobby.

Is a hobby dog a real dog?

I know my dog is real. She plays a HUGE role, has one of the most important JOBS I could possibly think of in my life. Just because noone has given her a rosette for it, doesn't mean it's not an important working role!

Hey I missed out on the sales!

I have a multipurpose ornament for trade and she does work! She can either be used as sheep or works well as a chest protector against husbands quick handed honk-honk, nub-nubs and will do what it takes to protect such chest, though works better with women's chest. Just be sure to wind her up every quarter past ten for best results.

well said dizzy, i agree 100%.

i believe most "working" dogs are simply doing hobbies. there arn't a lot (a few maybe but not many) things we can't do without dogs. so the work, is relaly just a hobby

Sure Jessie. We are also having a remnant sale.

Tosca was sold but they brought her back. But I'm not going to participate again till next sale. I figure I can put a disguise on her and she will look like a new dog.

Blue, scotch is bad for you (but oh so yummy!) so I will reply LOL

I dont know where the confusion lies where you think I am a purist with your comment that I would have passed blue by in the shelter because he is a mix breed...I did not say anything about the dog having to be a purebred...I did not say anything about the dog having to be any specific breed. All I said was that a dog (and I will specify to any and all dogs - mixred or pure) should work ;)

I'm glad this thread was able to rbing out the humour in people and I have been rather amused reading through all 40 pages...it seems a little extreme to be 40 pages in one night but hey it does bring a good chuckle or two!

Oh ya and to the question what do I call non-working dogs since I dont call them "fake"? I call them pets ;)

when i read this, i took it to mean dogs who are chained to a doghouse 24/7 and who serve no purpose other than to lead a miserable, bored, and unsocialized life, aren't real dogs, they're just shells of what they should be. maybe i was reading into it too deep, but i wasn't offended and took it to mean that dogs need to be stimulated and pushed to think and work in their everyday lives, instead of just lying in the dirt, barking at squirrels and sleeping all day.

I had never even noticed the siggy before! I'm not very observant.

It seems to me that she's saying any dog can be a working dog, and a working dog to her can do what all of us would consider work (herding on a working farm, etc.), but hobbies are considered work, too, (agility, flyball, etc). So, I would guess all dogs are 'real'. All dogs could participate in some activity if the owners work with it. Maybe it's the owners who do not have the dogs participating in work or hobby who are not 'real'.

We would need alot less dogs if only people who were willing/able to get them involved in an activity could own them.

My dog doesn't participate in anything more than playing chase, fetching balls, tug of war, and various other things he finds amusing.

For Sale: Pseudo Owner of Quasi Collie.

Slightly used. Ok, used a LOT. Has her own money. Can cook if not forced; bad house cleaner; given to fits of writing fantasy. Fairly intelligent except during full moon; keeps herself clean. Not overly bad to look at if the lighting is right.

Very high and mighty of you. I hope the next 10 pages continue to feed your ego. Cheers with a fine Scottish single malt.
