I just have one question, not directed at anyone in particular. Why is chazhound becoming the "BYB capital" all of a sudden???

I'm surprised that the vet. didn't want to treat the pup for the low blood sugar while your wife had it there

Me too. Especially considering it was a 30 minute drive back home. I would think they would want the sugar level back up asap.

I work for myself and have the ability to work from home if needed so I can sit with the puppy next week if necessary. I just don't get as much done as when I go to the office.

If this isn't directed at anyone in particular then why is it in my thread?

This is our first (and probably last) time to breed this dog. We have had her and an AKC registered male for several years. These are our household pets. Both are excellent specimens of a Basset hound. We didn't originally intend to breed them but we have had so many people asking for pups because the parents demeanor is unusually friendly. So, we decided to let them breed at least once. We are only selling the pups to people that we know and we are only charging them what we have in them. We are not in the business of selling dogs.

I came here for some help but apparently since I'm not a "Professional" breeder, I'm not welcome.

You are more than welcome, what Labbreeder meant is that recently we have had an influx of people coming in who know nothing more about breeding dogs other than "I need a boy and a girl, right?" You and your wife seem to (hopefully) be the exception to this, but it's made all of us a bit wary. I do apologize, and hope that you keep us updated and give us pictures of the whole Basset Band soon!

It was meant exactly as zoom said...and I said. Lately there have been ALOT of BYBers coming here saying "We're expecting/had puppies!" or "New pups, need help!". If you haven't done health tests, have a guarantee, have titled dogs, purebreeds and homes for them in advance AND are bettering the breed (health, temperament, etc) then you're a BYB ("you" referring to everyone that qualifies that has posted, not necessarily the OP of this thread). It's sad that everyone comes here expecting to be welcomed with open arms because they don't know what they are doing and are only creating more pups in the world that may end up homeless/dead. You only had 2, that's better than 10 +...however, 1 is already sick. That is sad. :( I hope the pup gets better. But, I also hope that you sell them on spay/neuter contracts and don't try to "get your money back" if you didn't breed properly (or follow the 'rules' of an ethical breeder). True, reputable breeders (that do everything they can correctly before/during/after breeding) do NOT get money back. If they do it's very, very little because the "sell" money recoups what was put into health tests, vaccines, proper breeding, feeding, etc.

Again, if you take this to mean YOU (the OP) that's up to you. I am strictly talking about those people that DO NOT fit the guidelines/ethical breeding practices of a reputable breeder. :)

I would have to agree. Basset Hounds are no strangers to their fair share of genetic disorders. Every bitch and dog that is bred should be health tested before breeding. It is only fair to them. Animals have a mating instint which is why it is our fault and responsiblity weather they breed or not. They are just doing what their instinct tells them, so it is their owners choice weather or not they wish for their animals to mate. That is why it is only fair to them to breed them the right way, and to make sure they are of sound health. The only way to be sure of that is by health testing. Their are so many dogs and puppies that are in shelters and/or so many suffering from genetic disorders from bad breeding.
Their are so many things that can go wrong and when making the choice to breed (even once) is putting your female's life and the life of her puppies at risk. It is not something to go into blindly.
Also, Basset Hounds are supposed to be exceptionally friendly. That is not unusual. Unusual would be one that is not friendly. Temperment is something to look for when chosing one to breed, but is not the only thing and should never be used a reason. Health testing isn't the only thing to do if you want to breed either, but it is one of the very important things that has to be done. If not then you may be bringing puppies into this world that may have a painful and poor quality of life. Not very fair to them IMO.

Just as I thought *shaking head* this member's not been back since the day he/she posted this. Perhaps he felt that being a new member asking for advice and then feeling the need to defend himself/herself on their very first post was a bit much?

Why doesn't someone put up a sticky thread entitled "Why you shouldn't breed your dog" and post it in each forum. That way, a new person can come in here and ask questions without getting interrogated and verbally beaten up.
They would have the option to read the sticky thread, and if they chose not to...then just leave it alone. No one should have questioned him about breeding his dog in the first place. The only purpose it served was to make him leave. :(
