Hey All,
Newbie here. Looks like a nice place. :)

Our Basset hound just had puppies last night (only two). One of them won't suckle at all and appears to be VERY bloated. I think she's constipated and that's the reason she won't eat.

Anyone have any suggestions for what to do???

Thanks!

What does popcorn have to do with anything?

I think the OP should take the pup to the vet also. He will probably need to be bottle fed. But you have to get him seen. He could die if not.

I am curious though, are you planning on having the mother spayed? No reason for her to keep producing puppies unless you are an actual breeder. I am assuming you are not since you asked what to do with a pup in obvious need of a vet and that you seem to not have a vet or emergency vet's number on hand which you worked with before who knows about your dogs pregnancy. There is nothing we can do to help the little guy, he has to be seen.

I agree

Most of us here are not authorized to give medical advice. I have no idea about breeding/ birthing/ or new borns.

The only person you should be talking to is your breeder and your vet. They would be the most helpful ones to you.

I think she was trying to insinuate that there was about to be a flame fest- as this poster obviously shouldn't have bred their poor dog in the first place since they seem to know so little.

Both Mom and pups should go to vets within 24 hours. Babies don't get constipated . Is Mom stimulating his tummy and anal area ?? It could be cleft palate or brain damage. With tomorrow being sunday , please go now !!

We have been talking to the vet who says to keep messaging the abdomen and the vet gave us some milk to feed it but I thought that there may be some more that we can do.

ooh, sounds bad! I agree, take them both to the vet ASAP... Also, Bubba is probably right, but if it is constipated than you REALLY have to take it to the vet because my hamster dies if constipation after 2 days!!!

Did your vet actually examine her, or was this by phone . Your bitch should have had the shot to clean her out too. It's amazing what " gunk " comes out afterwords ! Otherwise , this stays in uterus and could cause infections . Keep us up to date !! I only ever had one pup with this problem. Mom tried to lay on her after the whelp and never worked with her. She knew something was wrong. After a couple of days and and as many vet visits ... it was decided she had brain damage. She never did take to the bottle. I had to put her to sleep. Hope your story has a happier ending . Is the Mom young ??? Only 2 pups makes me wonder .

The moms about 4 years old and it was her first litter. The mom has been staying at the vet all day everyday this week so they could monitor her and they did all of the "prenatal" requirements. My wife handled all of that so I'm not exactly sure what they did.

The vet didn't seemed too concerned about the puppy's condition this morning  but we went ahead and took her to the emergency vet anyway. She is there now (my wife took her) and they put a feeding tube in her so maybe they'll get her fixed up.

We didn't want the mom to be alone (while my wife and I are at work) close to her due date and the vet did some prenatal care while they had her. We also had x-rays done beforehand.

No cleft palate. She was actually suckling in the beginning but then she quit.

Mom and the other puppy are still here with me and doing very well. The other puppy won't let go of mom. He's a pig. :)

My wife just called me. She didn't go into details (she was on her cell phone) but she said the vet said that the puppies lungs were slightly underdeveloped and it's blood sugar was low. They didn't keep her. Apparently the puppy did "its business" while it was there so they said we could take it home and to rub some corn syrup on its gums to bring its blood sugar back up and to keep it wrapped up in a blanket on a heating pad. Of course, we'll have to continue bottle feeding it.

Well, maybe she'll make it.

I'm surprised that the vet. didn't want to treat the pup for the low blood sugar while your wife had it there...I hope it will be ok, best of luck

Hope so !!! Odd situation .......please keep checking to see if pup will latch on to Mom . They should all be together as much as possible . How are you going to handle the every 2 to 3 hours of bottle feeding when at work ?? Now , after the pup is out of the woods, you can pass me some popcorn ....extra butter please and a cold beer would be nice !
