Lilly's been doing good for a while, just sleeping on the couch. I slowly reached to pet her several times, and she sort of whined at first but then was fine once she realized I was just petting her. I took them outside to go potty, and she didn't scream/cry when I picked her up to go down and up the stairs. They got into some mud while we were out, so, against my better judgment, I put them in the bath. She did whine a little like she normally does(she hates baths), but no crying or screaming. I dried her off as gently as I could, just a little whining(again, normal) but no crying or screaming. She seems to be good again :) I feel so much better now. I'm still going to take her to the vet in the morning to have something to file with the complaint against my "friend". I'll ask the vet how to go about filing that.

Thank-you all for your advice and support :)

I'm glad to hear your little girl is doing better! We'll keep sending her "feel better soon" vibes. :)

I agree with others now that you've explained the aftermath better - I'd be livid in your shoes. "sorry, but" is not a true "sorry" imo and speaks volumes about this person. def send her the vet bill and any training fees for handling issues!

What would I do? I would go after her to the full extent of the law. I would take her for everything I could and then hope she rots in hell!

I am glad your Lilly is feeling better.

my friend has this insane cat and when she was about 4-5 months old she jumped off a book shelf ran over to me, jumped and clawed into my knee. my first reaction was to hit it to knock it off me. my knees pretty messed up from past injuries so something stabbing methere gets a pretty big reaction. it was more of a hard shove but i instantly felt bad and can say that even though i HATE that cat scruffing it and chunking it at the floor is not something that even crossed my mind. that isn't a suprise reaction from ANYONE.

step 1: if shes sleeping soundly now and is reacting "fearfully" (and not just when you touch her) id wait untill morning, however first thing get her in, seen by a vet and dont take "we dont have any openings today" for an answer...
a fall like that can do some very serious injuries, pinched nerves are not uncommon and from her reaction trying to stand back up it woudlnt suprise me if she didnt at least give herself enough of a jolt to cause some swelling/bruising and tenderness.
before heading out to the vet call your frined, tell them you HAVE to take her to the vet and she will be responsibel for ALL vet bills associated with this injury, also send her an email, DATED and CC yourself on it, you want physical evidence that you told her that she is responsible for any vet costs that are a result of her actions.

step 2:
Take a DEEP breath, you panicing and worring will just freek the poor pup out...
shes going to be shaken, wowies are sensitive and dont take well to those kinds of situations, give her time, talk softly to her, be gentle and dont rush her, belive me, shell get over it, but right now she just needs a little quiet time, let her come to you rather than the other way round if possible, and reward her for calm behaviour. Shes probably not quite sure what exactly happend, all she knows is something bad happend and shes not sure where to direct her fear, give her time to settle and all will be ok.

step 3:
file a report, saying your sorry means absolulty nothing if your going to add a comment akin to "serves her right" to the end...shes not sorry...and it woudlnt suprise me if she does the same to her own dogs.
file a report, even if nothing comes of that you at least have a FORMAL report on file with the police should something legal come out of this, (ie she refuses to pay the vet bills, or theres potential serious injury, or she tries something like this again as "repeat offenders" are more likley to get comuppence on these situations)

step 4:
with a clear mind write down exactly what happend for your own records...anger has a tendency to twist perceptions, taking a moment now to make a clear account of the incident will help later shoudl things go further and emotions realy get flared.

step 5:
while at the vets explain EXACTLY what happend, and the reaction afterwards, how she was having trouble standing, balancing, screaming, seemed to be in pain ect, explain that even now shes still acting very frightend and screaming ect when you move neer here and your worried shes currently also in pain, see what the vets suggest but make sure they are very thorough, you would also like a WRITTEN report form the vet explaining their findings (injuries or not, potential future issues that might come from this ect...) and that they feel in their experience said injuries (if there are any) are the result of the incident.
you want them to keep a copy on file, you want to keep a copy for your own files and give your "friend" a copy, keep the origional vet bill for yourself and give your friend a copy of the bill along with this vet report.
keeping your papers/documentation in line and correct will help should things progress legally.

step 5:
call your "friend" and tell them you cant be friends with ANYONE that would do that to any animal let alone a tiny puppy...and point out that she didnt even show remorse, then, beyond any legal stuff, giving her bills ect id cut of most of the contact with her completly.
people that can do that to an animal are scum, plain and simple.

theres a huge difference between puching and animal off you, a reaction ect, and scruffing a dog and practically throwing it at the ground...
it sounds like this person needs anger management counceling or something and id be worried for her own pets.
I agree with all this.

I agree with everything said so far and I think Foxy gave some great advice. Let us know how the vet apt goes and give her a little snuggle from me. Poor little thing. I can definitely tell you that no friend that tries something like that with my animals is a friend of mine and I'm glad that you're ending your friendship with her. Sending you positive recovery vibes for the little one.

I would want the vet to see her even if she seems to be doing better, but, then I'm a little bit of a worrier.

My 2 cents which isn't worth 2 cents!!

While it was shocking and upsetting how your friend reacted she did not abuse the dog nor did she engage in intentional malicious harm to a companion animal or fall under any other statue. The dog peed on her, she reached and threw the dog away from her. That is really all there is to it. That is not abuse nor is it in any way an indicator that she is abusing her own dogs.

Your dog needs a vet because the spine may be damaged. Small dogs are easily broken.

She picks Lilly up by her scruff and throws her down at the floor with force!
That's an act of anger and malice. Any reasonable person would expect a forceful impact to have a significant chance of causing harm or even fatality in a small breed puppy like LIlly, and if you get a judge who has dogs there's a high probability he's going to interpret the statute to include this kind of action.

Even if no court ordered punishment were to come of pressing charges, there's always the torture factor inherent in being involved in any kind of court case.

^this^.

A reflexive reaction is going to be more of a shove or a hit. To grab a scruff and forcibly toss to the ground hard enough to cause a dramatic pain and fear response isn't a typical reflex. It's either an anger response ~ and someone whose anger is that uncontrollable needs professional help ~ or it's something that the person does on such a regular basis that they can do it reflexively, which is pretty horrible for her own animals.

I hope this woman never holds a baby who's diaper accidentally leaks.

How is Lilly doing today? I kept thinking of her and you all night.

I took Lilly to the vet at 9am, and we just got home 45 minutes ago. The vet took us right in instead of waiting to schedule an appt. She did a physical exam, and from that decided she wanted to do an x-ray. The x-ray showed that Lilly has 2 fractured ribs :( She said there isn't anything they can do for a fractured rib, so she wrapped her rib cage up very tightly with this sticky-wrap stuff, and had me purchase some pain medication for her. She had called the SPCA when I first arrived, and by the time we were almost ready to leave, they arrived. I filed the complaint, and the vet's assistant gave them copies of the medical records. They didn't indicate what they were going to do, other than go talk to her. Lilly is doing great. She hates the wrap, she keeps chewing at it. I have a cone from when Cody got fixed, so I need to find that and put that on her so she doesn't chew it off overnight when I can't watch her. The pain meds seem to be working, she doesn't whine at all and doesn't run from me when I call her. Her and Cody are playing right now. When the vet first told me her ribs were fractured, I just started crying, I was so angry. But now that were home I'm just glad I know what's wrong with her, and that it will heal and she can be made comfortable.

Thank-you everyone for your opinions and support. Hopefully, at the very least, my "friend" at least gets a ticket.

See if you can get an update from the SPCA in a few days. They should be able to tell you what the outcome is since your involved. Would be interesting to see what they have done.

I am sickened by what she did to your poor dog, throwing her to the ground hard enough to break her ribs, I really hope it has no lasting psychological effects on the poor little thing. The SPCA better go and give her a talking to and punish her in some way and she better not argue about paying the vet bills. I'm glad you brought her in to the vet and at least her head and spine are okay, physically she should recover just fine.

(((((((HUGS))))))) for you and Lilly for having to go through this :(

So glad you went to the vet. It's good to know exactly what's going on and why she is crying.
