So our neighbours (well across the "ally" neighbours) come over to complaine about me and Sadie. They rang our doorbell and chewed me out for chewing out their kid.

Here's the story:

I was washinig dishes and had the back door open to let the dogs run in and out. The gate was shut and the chain with the snap was secure (I cant LOCK it, but this way it cant blow open). Yes I can see the yard from were I was.

Well I hear Sadie grown, bark and snarl. So I look up and see this stupid kid lifting the chain to come into our yard. I guess they had thrown a ball over. Well Sadie was right at the gate ready to tear the kid's face off and the stupid kid was still comming in.

I run to the gate and yell "No" to both the kid and Sadie. well the kid say I need to get my ball. I told him that I do NOT allow people in my yard with the dogs and that he could have been seriously hurt. If he would have come in Sadie would have bit him. I was SO mad and livid at him and yelling at him.

Well a hr later the dad comes by and is yelling at me about the incident. I told him to get lost and next time if it was better for him I would let Sadie bite his kid. I know I shouldnt have said that but I was SO mad. You could tell he wanted to hit me but Sadie was standing behind me growling at him.

I cant wait untill we move. It's a really rough neibourhood around here.

You did the right thing by telling the kid he shouldn't go in your yard. No one should invade someone's property. He wasn't very smart to continue his way into the yard with a snarling dog... You would have been in BIG trouble if he would have been bitten. :(

A couple weeks ago the doorbell rang. Well of course it took me a while to actually answer it, and I saw nobody there. I went out on the front porch and saw two kids standing on the sidewalk yelling "he is in your yard" "he is going to steal your stuff" this was all a joke to them, as I yelled "Is there a kid in my yard?" And the one boy says "Not a kid, an adult".
Well all my dogs were inside the house with me, and what had really happened was the kids ball flew over my fence and the adult went into my yard to retreive it, but the kids were laughing and thinking the whole thing is funny. Well it kinda scared me, not knowing completely what was going on, So I see this 20 year old opening the gate, 6 ft tall privacy fence with gate, and coming out. Boy did I tell him a thing or two. Including he is lucky he didn't loose a limb walking in there and never to go into my yard again. I am glad Rocket was in the house, cause altough she has a great temperment, she doesn't like strangers near "her yard".

Why were you mad and yelling at the kid? Kids are kids, they go get balls they hit over the fence. Tell the kid NICELY that the dog might bite him and not to come in by himself.

If I was that kids dad, I'd be at your door too.

I agree with Pixie, The thing is the kids should have NEVER tried to go in the fence, period......They should have knocked on the door and asked that she get the ball for them...

Were talking about KIDS here. Tell them nicely that the dog may bite them. If that doesn't work, go and tell the parents. I don't see how anyone could be shocked by kids jumping over a fence to get a ball. It's not like they were stealing stuff.

Everyone would be shocked and appalled if someone said they yelled at their dog , yet it's all ho-hum when we do it to kids. I don't get it.

If I knew my dog would not hesitate and attack if some kid came into my yard I would yell. I'd rather yell and shock the kid for a second rather then say "hunny please don't come in here because my dog may rip your face off". I am not saying its right but it does get results.

Also I have never gone into someone elses yard with out asking first.

Ok off topic but OMG! I started busting up as I imagined some lady calmly saying "hunny please don't come in here because my dog may rip your face off" with one of those old wife, robot like demeaners! LOL :p

Boys don't think that way, trust me. We hit a ball over a fence, we climb the fence to get the ball. I'm not saying it's right, but thats how it goes.

my brother and i use to live next door to people who had two saint bernards. if we got a ball... or a frisbee... or whatever we happened to be throwing at the time in their yard we'd always ask before just jumping over. think of it this way... right now they're young kids so a lot of people are like 'boys will be boys' or 'they're just kids' but will you be so lienient on them when they jump your fence and they are 16? 17? 18? they're still boys and until 18 they are still minors how would you feel having kids of that age jumping your fence? tresspassing is illegal and i feel everyone should have to follow the rules. thew kid was on her property plain and simple

Well, I have boys. If they came home and told me someone yelled at them for climbing a neighbors fence to go get a ball, I would tell them "Not to go on others property" and they were wrong. They should have knocked on the front door and asked permission to get the ball or asked homeowner to "please get it for them". AND ALWAYS SAY THANKYOU!!!!

I always try to teach my kids respect of other people and their property. Because that is what I expect from others (although you rarely get it anymore). Parents tend to make excuses for their kids instead of really looking at it as what is right or wrong.

It is also not that safe to go in a fenced yard with unfamilar dogs.;)

i agree. it seems the kids would be more willing to knock on the door and ask for their ball if they weren't yelled at. seems to me that if the dogs aren't out, and the ball goes over the fence, they might try and get it again instead of asking for help. it works to say "i was scared when i thought you might get hurt!" instead of taking out the fear and anger on the kid. if i were a parent i'd be at your door too... i think you missed a good opportunity to teach a child something. instead you just yelled at him.
hopefully you have a "beware of biting dog" sign or something?

I would be shocked at a kid jumping over my fence! If your kid is too obnoxious or too young to think about not jumping over other peoples fences, they shouldnt be playing alone in the street.

ARGH!

i think you best watch your yard after an encounter like that. Who knows if they will retaliate or not. Wouldn't it have been easier to say hold on..i will get the ball for you and next time here is my phone number just give me a call and i will find your ball or call the dogs in if they are out?

I grew up in the country where nothing was fenced in. I still only crossed the yards of people I knew and knew they wouldn't mind. If I came across a new neighbor, or I was in a different territory from my usual territory I'd either give that area a wide berth, or I'd go ask for permission. When I ran into fenced yards, I'd avoid them... if i lost a ball... well.. oh well... teaches me not to lose my things.

I personally side with the fact the kid should have asked for permission first... plain and simple. Manners in this country has definately gone out the window in the past 20 years.

Tresspassing is tresspassing and a dog has the right to defend it's property - which is how some bites end up happening. A kid goes over a fence to a yard, the dog bites because the kid is tresspassing.

Who's at fault?

The kid for going over the fence? Or the dog for defending it's property?

Depending on where you are it can go either way...
