My mentor gave me an old list of about seventy breeds from "smartest" too "dumbest" which i think was compiled about five years ago from old force based trainers. The top five, in order were 1 border collie 2 standard poodle 3 german shepherd 4 Golden retriever 5 shetland sheepdog 6 lab.
Thought i might go up to six to avoid the (oh no, but labs are guide dogs!)
My club has found that using positive methods breeds long thought of as "dumb" are now winning titles! So, we have almost completely discarded the old chart, though nearly all would agree that the border collie is way up there. Also, some breeds arn't documented (such as the australian kelpie). In my opinion the kelpie is the smartest breed on average, they tend to works stuff out about three seconds before a border collie. But there will always be individuals.

Richie- What I mean is sorda different. You know all the breeds people are developing like snoodles, labradoodles and groodles? Or a bichon frise crossed a shihzu=shichon? Well, thats what i meant i dont like to be bred purposly. Accidental breedings are normal to happen. The dogs are great and have all the quality's one might want. But its like... But, on the other hand, not only pure dogs are lovable. we have a border collie cross. He's a dream come true! (He acually was my dream!) He has a great temperment... Also, don't all breeds come from the wolf? I read it somewhere. So from that people must of developed different breeds. I dont know. At the end of the day, dogs are here mainly for companionship. It doesn't matter what the dog looks like. And they love you for who you are as well, if your short or tall, fat or skinny, ugly or pretty. Thats the thing i most adore about dogs.

i'm kinda talking against my self in this message. Oh well. Kinda arguing with myself. Lol. I think both are ok arguments. What do you guys think?

Of course Border Collies are the smartest breed.

Really though, I agree that it depends on the individual. While I can't say I've ever met a dim Border Collie, I have met a few Bloodhounds who give my BC and Pap (both incredibly bright dogs if I do say so myself.) a run for their money.. The breed can't dictate what the intelligence of the individual will be.

I think the german shepherd is the smartest (though by that I mean all around best learner) because it has proven itself since the dawn of its creation as being able to not only perform, but excel at every task asked of it from protection, herding, obediense, agility, tracking, retrieving, seeing eye, hearing ear, various other assitance duties, bomb detector, drug detector, babysitter, and many more. of course a a few breeds are better at one or 2 of those tasks, but no other breed has proven its ability to perform ALL of those tasks, and perform them extremely well.
that said, I think every breed, and every individual dog is the smartest in its own way. as I said on one of the 1st pages, the animal IQ tests are as subjective and flawed as the human IQ tests due to many factors, mostly because just like humans, every dog (and breed) has a different way of learning.
