This is a ridiculous idea, period. We can't save everyone from everything and the sooner people and the government realize this, the better off they will be. As someone on the comments pointed out, we already HAVE 'redesigned' hot dogs..........it's called BOLOGNA.
That said, almost 5 years ago when I worked at our school a little boy (in 3rd grade, so 9-10) DID die from choking on a hot dog during lunch. It was served in 'corn dog' form. Paramedics were called and several people worked on him in the meantime to no avail. It was wedged in too tightly. When the paramedics arrived, they also tried and ultimately used some type of 'tongs' (I'm sure they aren't called that for medical use) to reach down inside his throat and remove it. It was too late......he was gone.
Our school system no longer serves hot dogs in any form, which I think should be the case in EVERY school system. (at least for lower grades) Hot dogs are a MAJOR choking hazard, especially for children. You have a cafeteria full of kids, many goofing around while eating and only 2-3 adult supervisors, really not a safe scenario.
And what KILLS me with our school system is that they cut out hot dogs, but STILL serve little cups of grapes
Grapes are right up there with hot dogs for children choking. *sigh*
Anyway, here is a list of the most choking hazardous foods:
Nuts
Hot dogs
Grapes
Hard candy
Popcorn
Raisins
Raw carrots
Spoonfuls of peanut butter
Chunks of meat
If this hot dog 'campaign' goes through, think they are going to 'redesign' nuts? grapes? popcorn? ANY of those foods on the list? LOL CRAZY
