Who are you to call all of these breeders BYBs because some of these breeders I know personally who care about their dogs and breed only when they think it is safe to do. Also, they are very active in the dog show ring. Read our terms of use:
http://www.k9ring.com/Terms-Of-Use. We do not guarantee that
all breeders are reputable. Not all people are angels too you know. You can find plenty of reputable breeders on our site. Stop bashing other people's sites if you have nothing constructive to say.
Tell us who they are and we will remove them. What is your definition of BYB? There are some hobby breeders listed there and we are aware of that. To call someone a BYB you have to have proof. What if you are a breeder who does not like some other breeder and just wants to ruin their reputation? We will go today through all of the listings and start deleting one by one.
I think there are some major misunderstandings here. BYB = Back Yard Breeder. BYB does not equal puppy mill. BYBs can love their dogs, love the breed, whatever, but they aren't improving the breed. Puppy mills breeds dogs in
horrible conditions and sell to pet stores and brokers primarily - they treat dogs like livestock and are solely in it for the money. BYBs might love their dogs, treat them amazingly well, find good homes for them, and may or may not be in it for the money. They might even have titled or health tested dogs. But there are a lot more qualifications than treating your dogs right to actually be a breeder deserving of the title "reputable." Dekka started a good list for you.
I think a better thing to focus on, rather than what makes a person a BYB - as that can be hard to define and EVEYONE has a slightly different view - is a base set of criteria that make good breeders. For
me, personally, those are:
-Health testing (hips, thyroid, elbows, eyes - whatever tests are typical for their breed of choice)
-Not breeding dogs younger than 2 years of age (3 for bitches)
-Not breeding more than two litters consecutively from one bitch and not having more than two litters a year (total - not per dog, because I find it hard to believe anyone could possibly care for more than two or so litters a year properly. Maybe some people can, but it's a good place to start in ruling out bad breeders)
-No kennels (PLENTY will disagree with me on this, which is fine, but this is just my personal list to give you some references)
-Showing, if applicable (for instance - I don't want a BC puppy whos eparents are show ring champions)
-Working the dogs, if applicable (I wouldn't want an APBT with "working" titles... I'd want their owners in jail for animal abuse)
-Sport/obedience titles if the dogs don't work
-health guarantee
-will take any dog they have bred/adopted out back (this one is very important)
I can't think of any more right now. You might want to do a search for threads with some keywords like "what is a reputable breeder" to get more ideas.
