Nancy, I really like this site http://whfoods.org/foodstoc.php I have gotten a lot of good info from it. I love that it gives you the nutritional values of fruits and veggies. I really like red potatoes and I am trying to figure out if they are healthier then regular potatoes. Does anyone know? They are actually really good just boiled or roasted with a little garlic and olive oil but I worry about the carbs in them. Maybe I would be better off not having them at all.

Anything white has a significant amount of carbs. So... even though the skin is red, I would imagine they'd still be packed with carbs. I'm sure you can have them on occasion. I know tonight TJ is making mashed potatoes to go with our dinner and I'm already prepared to just have a small scoop and fill up on the chicken and veggies.

But your red potatoes in olive oil and garlic is more healthy than mashed potatoes... maybe I can talk him into cooking those instead of the mashed.. that way I won't have the extra fat and calories of the milk and butter he puts in them.

Thanks for the link to the site.. I'll check it out.

Here's a link to a site that tells you all about potatoes.. maybe it says somewhere on the page whether the red ones are better for you.

One major piece of advice is to cut out all of your liquid calories. I don't drink anything with calories (except for V8 and fruit juice on occasion). I haven't had a non diet soda in about a year, and I substitute seltzer, water, and diet soda for regular sodas and juice. This cuts out a TON of liquid calories, which can really add up if you're not careful.

There are so many foods/drinks with high calories/high fat that you wouldn’t even realize. Margaritas, for example, are really high in calories. There are 740 calories in just ONE margarita :yikes: If you want to have a few drinks, instead of having all high calorie ones, you could do one very small “bad” drink and then ones that aren’t as high calorie. For example, you could have one small margarita, and then have light rum with diet cola for the rest of your drinks. That way, you’re only consuming about 120 calories per rum and diet coke drink.

Good luck! I've never been on a diet before because I've never had to, nor have I really changed my eating habits much, so I can't imagine how hard it is.

wow, I didn't think there was that many calories in a margarita.... :yikes: Thank goodness I rarely drink.... I read the back of the label and it had like 100 calories for 4 oz of the margarita mix... so I didn't think that was too bad. I have no idea how many calories are in tequilla because it didn't say on the label.

I've been doing pretty good just drinking water even though I absolutely hate it. I dread the glass after glass of it. Some days I can't bring myself to drink more than a glass. I keep telling myself that one day I will love water...lol.

I can still weigh myself on my scale... so that's good. I am fluctuating up to 3 pounds from day to day. I've decided I like to weigh everyday... it's not just a habit. It really does help me stay focused. For instance... if I get on the scale and it says ERROR... I know I better crack down and try harder. I'm just so excited that so far I'm keeping the weight off and SLOWLY... more sems to be coming off.

Does anyone know what is the best brand of wheat bread to eat. I used to eat Roman Meal wheat bread but now I hear that is bad. It is so aggravating when you think you are doing good then you find out "they":yikes: are sneaking sugar and what not into your bread. If anyone can let me know of a good wheat bread with no sugar and other "bad things" it would be greatly appreciated. It does not matter if it is a store brand believe it or not Target makes wheat bread that is really good but now I have to go back and check the label again.
ok, so first off, companies are not sneaking anything (well, they are...but...you can find it). READ THE INGREDIENTS. And you are right, what you are eating is crappy (no offense). Here are the main ingredients to Roman Meal 100% wheat bread that make it crap:

high fructose corn syrup & vital wheat gluten

these are both JUNK. You shouldnt be eating anything with HFCS. I personally eat Ezekial sprouted bread, found in the freezer section. However, it is pretty costly, but since i dont eat bread often, it works for me.

I find that Aunt Millie makes some good breads without HFCS...BUT YOU HAVE TO READ THE INGREDIENTS...some of them do!!!

I actually bought Ezekial bread a while back. I had been looking all over for it and I found a store in my area that had it and it was in the frozen section. When I opened it it was mildewed :yikes: there was green fungus throughout the bread. I brought it back to the store and got my money back. So I don't trust buying anymore from this store. I wish I could find it somewhere else. I looked into making it myself but that is not going to happen I would never be able to find all of those ingredients.

Okay, I don't know what's different now, but I'm hungry all the time now. And it is getting so frustrating to me because I really don't want to cheat and yet.. my belly keeps growling and growling and I "feel" hungry.

I guess the salad's just aren't sticking by me. Someone told me that fiber fills you up, anyone know if that's true?

It really helps, Nancy. I don't like apples, but I've found a couple of varieties, Granny Smith and Pink Lady, that I do like and they will satisfy me at times when I can't seem to shake The Hunger.

Nancy .... keep working on it !!!!
I think I'm just having a bad day. I'm sick of being hungry and I can't figure out why I'm suddenly feeling that way when it's been fine all this time with what I've been eating.

I knew this wasn't going to be an easy journey. I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet. For the first time in forever I actually can see results.. it would be a shame to give up now.

I'm going to go eat my salad and see if I feel better after eating something. And I'm so sick of dang water. I'm peeing all the time and it's a nuisance...lol.

Like I said.. I think I'm just having a bad day. Maybe my hormones are running around.. who knows, I'm just ready to pick a fight with someone..lol.

Oh, a SMALL handful of nuts helps a LOT, Nancy. Especially cashews, almonds or pistachios.

Something I have learned, too, is you never, ever EVER eat out of the container. Put your portion into a dish, close the container, put it away, and WALK AWAY and sit down with your nibbles.

fiber is great...helps stabilize your blood sugar levels.

Also, don't forget your fat!! Fat sends signals to your brain that you are full. Throw that handful of nuts Renee suggested on your salad, or add an avocado or something.

def try some green tea, it has some properties that aid in weight loss by helping to increase your metabolism

YOU CAN DO IT :)

I will admit, I haven't read all the way through this thread and I don't post here a lot but I have been following your journey for a couple months now. I may have even posted already on this thread a couple days ago. lol.. I am always watching my diet. I have done Weight Watchers twice now. I am on it currently. The thing to remember is that you need to eat a balanced diet. I know that for me personally, I need a protein (meat, egg, PB) with every meal or I am starving. I typically eat one with my lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. Usually not with breakfast. I also learned that watching calories is far more effective than just watching fat grams which may seem simple to most but was something I never realized. Portion control is so important. For me, since I count WW points, I know how many I can have and can calculate before I eat. Basically the higher in fiber something is, the more calories I can eat and it is still the same amount of points. It is a sliding scale type of thing.

If you are eating a bunch of salads, try adding a baked chicken breast to it or even a hard boiled egg without the middle. Or maybe a serving of ham or turkey. That should help it stick to you better.

For instance, my dinner always consists of a meat, a starch that is low in points ( 2 points per serving) and a vegetable cooked in a way that hasn't added a bunch of calories. If I want more, I got back for veggies b/c they are free for me.

And it is OK to have a cheat meal here and there. When you do it, don't go overboard, and don't decide that b/c you did bad today you will continue to do bad today and start over again tomorrow....just start over with the next meal. When I am dieting I always start craving pizza and fried food even though it isn't something I typically eat. I treat myself from time to time...and sometimes I make my own and make it work for my diet...like the other night you were talking about wings which I LOVE...someone suggested you buy chicken tenders and sauce and make you own and by golly I bought some the next day to make my own. I also bought stuff to make my own pizza's but they are filled with veggies and LF meat and minimal cheese...they are way tastier than Domino's.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck. I know some people say diet soda is bad and I know it isn't good for you but one every once and awhile should be OK if it is within reason and you don't abuse them. There are some great flavored waters and also some great Minute Made juices and other drinks that are very tasty. There are a lot of great low calorie alternatives for food and drink if you just keep watching!
