Ok I don't have pics of it's awfulness right now but I still want ideas on how to paint it. I've got these old cupboards that were probably all old, dark, reddish wood but someone painted the doors white and left the wood behind it dark. So I want to sand it all down and stain it something... I don't know what.

I don't have a colour theme at all! I know exactly what I want to do with my living room but none of my other rooms. <big sigh>

I love those cupboards with the glass on the doors...those are cool. I would try and keep them as light as possible though....dark colors will make the room seem smaller than a bright color.

Before you try to do refinishing, figure out exactly what your cabinets are made of. They may look like solid wood, but that doesn't mean they are. Many cabinet doors are made of particle board with a thin wood venier (pardon my spelling). In that case, it's probably not worthwhile to go to through the trouble of refinishing. If it turns out that they're not solid wood, I think it would be better to just repaint them. We did that in our kitchen, and it looks lovely.

I'm not sure about the doors but I'm pretty sure that the rest is solid wood. It's an old house so I'm hoping it is.

they're still a pain in the tootie to sand completely down if you want a lighter stain. tuscany is my favorite kitchen style! either a light stain, or I know someone with a tuscany style that has her cabinets stained a red...the color red, not mahogany or such. it still allows some woodgrain to show thru, yet the cabinets are beautiful soft red. then she added blue & yellow as accents. she has a hanging pot rack (you can make one easy and cheap by turning a ladder and hanging it from chains at the 4 corners..then use large S hooks to hang pots) with tons of copper. it is simply gorgeous. blue/yellow rich fabrics. or...I'd sand and paint them a creamy white color...not white/white, but soft cream. and still go with blues & yellows. wish I could come over and play!!!!!!!!! :)

I wish you could too Debi and you just described exactly what I want!

I think we would hit our heads on a hanging pot rack though. The ceilings don't seem to be that high.

The blue and yellow is exactly what I want. Maybe some wrought iron type stuff too? Like curtain rod and ... I don't know.

And I bet it will bled nicely with my mostly yellow living room :D

We have just had the doors and drawers of our old cupboard dipped to remove all the cream paint off of them to match our new kitchen units, they are now back to their original wood. I think we are going to leave it natural and just put some kind of oil on it to protect it.

I'm not sure if you want to just stain it or want to get it to the original wood though. If you are going to stain it I'd use a lighter stain such as light oak, thats what colour my floor is and I love it.

Yeah I like the lighter colours too. And it's such a small kitchen... I like the light oak or even driftwood colours :D

I guess it really depends on what colour your walls will be, is the kitchen going to be blue and yellow or is that the living room?

Thats a huge kitchen! I like the color arrangement!
I love the pots and pans rack. I need one of those for my Cast Iron that I have been collecting.

that's not my kitchen :) It's from the colour visualizer. I love the pots and pans rack. I bet I could fit a small one about the sink

I love the natural wood with polyurethane. gotta love that poly...it stands up to everything. there are lots of wrought iron items...and that's a great thing to keep an eye open for if you go to flea markets! it can be spruced up with a quick spritz of spray paint from a can, in a nice flat black. keep an eye out for a little outdoor table and a couple chairs in wrought iron...that would be so cute.

I didn't think I'd like it as I'm not a fan of yellow, but I've got to say I do. I like the yellow and blue together and I love the green trim. In all I think it's a nice combination, oh and I love the flooring too.

So when are you coming debi? I do need a smaller table though. We don't really have room in the kitchen for a table as is.

black cast iron would look good hanging from a small pot rack. then you could put some greenery intertwined above the rack. I'm not terribly fond of that kitchen...I adore blue and yellow, but not color-blocked like that. maybe if those countertops were black.........

Yeah, I'll have to do something with the countertops. I can't afford much more than paint at the moment though
