This afternoon, Annie got into a pack of roach traps that I had bought because we were having a slight roach problem. Luckily, I got home from running errands when I did and I called the vet when I found black, plastic remnants all over the floor.

Annie went to the vet and they gave her a drug that induced vomiting so she would puke up all the traps she ate (they were stuck together in a pack, she had about 6 of them), and the vet kept her for about 6 hours. Once he deemed her fit to come home, he called me and I picked her up. When I went to get her, he consulted with me and told me that he doesn't want Annie feeding her puppies anymore because he doesn't want to run the risk of what poison that did get in her system to transfer to them, and since they're 4 weeks old anyway, to go ahead and start them on a regular diet of puppy food and wean them from her 100%.

I didn't think it would be as hard as it has been.

First, we moved the puppies from the living room into my office so that we could close the door and keep Annie out. I also kenneled her because she tends to get into things at night. Right now she is barking and howling, and it's the howl of a mother missing her babies. :( I feel so bad, I thought I'd at least let her out of the kennel, but she'll try to tear the door down to get to them.

What should I do? I let her come in on supervised visits and have to keep pushing puppies away from her when she comes in here. I know the vet said it's what's best for the pups, but it's breaking my heart that Annie is crying for them. :( Plus I just feel like a complete moron for leaving those traps out and her getting into them... but I didn't think my dog would think poison would be tasty... :/

take a pair of panty hose and cut off one leg, then cut off the foot part. Use the support kind, probably queen size for her.

Cut holes in the hose leg that is now a tube, for her legs. Pull it up over her and put her legs through. This way she can be with the puppies but they can't nurse. With supervision of course.

Oh, it did! I swear, it was fate that I came home when I did. I had taken vomdom's Class A jacket to get his unit patch sewn on because we're going to an Army ball next week... well once I got to the alteration shop, I couldn't find the patch so I came back home wondering if I'd left it here, and that was when I found the roach traps scattered throughout the house and Annie didn't look like she felt so good. I was so scared! Fortunately she's okay, but she's gonna have one heck of a tummy ache...

Hehe... that's a good idea! :D I'm laughing picturing doing this to her... she'd probably be so embarrassed and just sit in her kennel. LOL

Thanks for the advice! I'll have to try it tomorrow! :D

I should add obviously that the upper part, the thigh part goes around her chest and then the foot part toward her rear.

Hope this works for you!

Did you talk to the vet about how to help her milk dry up? She will get very uncomfortable. You must beware of mastitis. Fast her for 24 hours, and give short rations of water. After 24 hours, feed half food and gradually increase water.

Ice will help, as will keeping her in the tube.

Good luck.

Ooh, he didn't mention that... I'll have to ask him when I call him tomorrow, he wanted me to give him a heads up on how she's doing. I didn't even think about it!

Ice... do I put it on her teets?

Poor girl! Virgo got into mouse poison once, the stupid bint. That was the weekend the e-vets got to know us well.

I hope she feels better! The pups should be ok, though it'll be a sudden change for them.

Steep some sage tea and add it to her meals and she will dry up within days. Old Amish woman's trick and it works very very well here.
HEy, that's a great tip, HBH. Can you use fresh sage or must it be dried?

I grow sage as a culinary herb, so I usually have it around.

I'd imagine fresh would work better...I use the stuff from the grocery store and steep it a long time...makes a very strong tea! Usually the girls take it willingly tho.

Thanks! :D I'll have to try that! I'm going to the vet to pay off the rest of her bill. Annie pretty much eats anything, she might just take to it! :D

I was also told cabbage works. Anyone ever tried that?

My sister put cabbage leaves in her bra........she was advised to do this by her MIL. I don't know that it helped dry up the milk, but the cold leaves supplied some relief to her aching breasts, LOL

I would think giving Annie cabbage may cause some VERY loose stools, not to mention the stinky gas.......

Yeah... I don't think I should give her any more of a reason to stink... LOL

Ty gets bad enough gas as it is!

RED great thought on the pantiehose!

with the sage, they should work the same asusming you use the right amounts, if using dried use more than you would if using fresh.
