I need some suggestions.

I've been sick for 4 days with stomach pain and other stuff leading to a lot of time spent lying quietly on the couch and trying not to stir up my insides.

I've never been a movie person but a few of my friends have good taste, I decided this year to watch some of those movies that everyone should see. I'd never seen "Fightclub" till the start of the year, its now one of my favourite movies and I now relise what the big deal is about Brad Pitt. lol

I also only saw "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" for the first time this year and loved it.

The other suggestions I got that I've ripped through in the last few days are

Pulp fiction (yeah.. I'd never seen it)
The Boondock Saints
Romper Stomper
Trainspotting

All great.

So seeing as I'm likely gonna lie here for the next day or two and watch some more movies, anyone got some suggestions? I'm not much of a movie buff but I'm loving watching some really good drugs, sex, murder movies and I need to catch up on the classics.

OK definitely no drugs, sex or murder (well, there is some murder) so maybe not for you, but just generally The Princess Bride is a must see! I get super disappointed whenever someone says they haven't seen this movie - it's such a classic and so freaking funny. Plus, by seeing it you'll understand all the references to it that pop up in other movies/shows.

As far as the classics, some of my favorites... The Quiet Man (John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara), The Philadelphia Story (Kate Hepburn, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart), To Kill a Mockingbird (Gregory Peck), Twelve Angry Men (the original with Henry Fonda).

If you don't mind some fluff... Galaxy Quest with Tim Allen... it lampoons the Star Trek phenom really well.

If you like Brad Pitt you'll enjoy the younger Robert Redford :)
Out of Africa
The Sting
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

And a second vote for Second hand Lions and Princess Bride. Totally different movies but both awesome.

Up is a kid movie but fantastic. And the talking dogs periodically yelling "squirrel" crack me up to no end LOL.

A Clockwork Orange, Dawn of the Dead, Clerks... I think Pulp Fiction was already mentioned, but that might be one you need to watch twice. And A Clockwork Orange is really weird, so it might be one you only want to watch once. :p

If you liked Boondock Saints, they have a second one that came out not too long ago.
Grand Torino with Clint Eastwood is a good one.
I love Johnny Depp and would suggest just about any move he is in. My favorites being:
Pirates - all of them. I love Captain Jack
Alice
Sweeny Todd - this is a really dark musical. I love musicals so this is a double love for me.
Public Enemy is pretty good. Johnny Depp as Dillinger and it has Christian Bale

I also love Vin Diesel so with him I suggest Pitch Black and then Chronicles of Riddick
Pacifier is cute
The Fast and The Furious

It's a small budget movie but so amazing!
YES!!! I love that movie so much.

Um I still can't hear that dancing in the rain song without cringing....lol. I think that movie scarred me for life.

I don't know if you like indie movies (these aren't murder/drugs/badstuff movies either lol) but I love Penelope, Dakota Skye, MirrorMask and 500 Days of Summer.

One of my favorites that nobody has seen is "Gardens of Stone". It's set in Washington, DC during the Vietnam war and centers around the soldiers that take care of the burials (the "old guard"). It has so many stars - DB Sweeny, Angelica Houston, James Caan, James Earl Jones, Dean Stockwell, Larry Fishburn, Mary Stuart Masterson. It was a Francis Ford Coppola movie. It's not a "war movie". I'd say the war is more of a character in the film.

Gardens of Stone (1987) - IMDb

Along the same genre (sort of) is "Taking Chance".

I somehow missed the drugs, sex, murder part. I stand by my suggestions, but also:

Double Indemnity
Legend of the Fall (with Brad Pitt, so good)
Brick
The Lookout
Bonnie and Clyde

ETA:

Requiem for a Dream
North By Northwest

I'm still too traumatized to watch it again in an attempt to figure out what on earth was going on.

And yes to 500 Days of Summer!!
