I've asked myself this question many times. On every forum I have ever been a member of, there's always been at least one mod that does NOT deserve the moderating position.

I have been a mod, and still am(though that forum really doesn't actually have mods or disciplinary actions), and when conflicts arise, I've always been fair, precise, and reasonable in the way I deal with them. Much of the time, often getting unbiased opinions from others to insure my thoughts of the situation. I think for a person to be a mod, the number one thing is knowing how to deal with others, and part of that is knowing how to keep your cool and not get angry, while still issuing a fair and reasonable warning or punishment. Unfortunately, every forum I've been a member of there's always been one mod that does not possess these qualities to be a good moderator.

Which makes me even more confused and bewildered on how some of these people are chosen as mods! :p So, sorry.. I guess I didn't answer your question at all!

I guess this is something you wanted to get off your chest?

No, it doesn't answer the OPs question. What you say though is a matter of opinion. I'm sure for every moderator we have there is a at last one member that doesn't think we deserve to be a mod! Not every gets along all the time but every moderator has a role on this forum. They all have their strong points and were selected for a reason. Some are good at being blunt and to the point. Others are good at diffusing a situation with humour. Some really help out because they are so active they see many, more posts than most of us. Still others are great at making people feel comfortable and welcome, which I think is key in a big community like this where new members can often get lost.

All of us are human and clash with members at times. It's bound to happen. So you have a grudge against a moderator. That's normal but I can guarantee that person has a role in this community.

You have to keep in mind that while it may be ideal to 'keep your cool and not lose your temper' there are members that respond to nothing but a firm hand or getting told exactly what they are doing wrong and what is going to be done about it. Still others are so sensitive that you have to gently pussy-foot around the issue. It's all subjective but I think we have a good crew here.

Ya ....we stay incognito as much as possible . We do have a problem with Dr2. every once in a while , as she's new and still wants to wear her shades and trench coat . Only problem is , she loves to flash !
Those were the terms of my contract Grammy...if you'll remember I was never told what to wear under the trench coat OR that I had to keep it buttoned...

Ya, and I think we're even the same height too.:D
One size fits all, that's how mac's work! Haven't you even noticed that tall men's macs fall just below the knees, and short men's macs are always scraping the floor?! ;) I guess I have just been flashed more regularly than you others, I have time to take in the lining details now! :D

The number one thing for being a mod is to be objective. To be able to hold firm onto one's own beliefs/views/morals and still be objective on the forum when things get out of control.

Then, comes things like having to deal with pointless drama, knowing how to handle people and the situations they create for themselves., keeping the cool when things get heated and handling trolls and spammers.

This is not a perfect world, thus, Chazhound is not a perfect dog forum. But we have a wonderful group of people that devote much of their free time to ensure that Chazhound runs as smoothly as possible.

Given the title of 'Moderator' is not handed out like candy. Every moderator on this forum has a purpose, regardless of whether you think they deserve it or not- the decision lies with the Chaz Gods. :)

Tess ... each Mod has been placed where they seem best fit . I'm in Breeds and Breeding .....I feel I can post anything I want in Health or Puppy for example . I chime in as a member there ... not as a Mod. I my area , I try to lead/teach or help the best I can and oil any troubled waters . We aren't a group of Pollyannas . And yes ... Chaz lets us know if we are out of line .

I agree, I think that this forum seems to be great so far. I havent been a member for too long, but from what I have come across has been very positive thus far. I was a member of another forum before this and was only involved for less than a week. It was horrible, judgemental, and a lot of the people in it ganged up on a lot of the newcomers questions. Even though I wasnt' one of the people being lashed out at, I didn't like how just because some people were not as educated about their dogs as others, that they were belittled...I mean isn't that the purpose of a dog forum, to spread knowledge in a kind and welcoming manner??? Keep up the great work you witty members and mods of Chaz!! :)

It is the members that make the forum! Definitely.

'We' try to have an open forum with some ground rules. Try being the key word :D

Tessa.. I imagine keeping everything in prospective is an important part of being a moderator, as well as maturity and being level headed. Can't take things personally. A lot of them are also very well educated where animals are concerned. (Sucking up so I can be included in one of those "happy hours" they talk about.) It also helps that when they're going to go into verbal battle with someone, they come armed... either intellectually or with a pretty good sense of humor. (That Dr2 has a crazy sense of humor!!!)
