But a dog that is abused (by definition) will not perform the things our dogs do for their masters in our training.
Look, you folks do not believe in physically correcting dogs. I do. I make a living at the top levels of professional K-9 security and training so why do you think that your thinking is correct over mine?

REPEAT QUESTION (from Dekka):

Are you aware that people have trained police dogs, and animals for military without physicals corrections?

I work in rescue. Have you ever looked into the eyes of a dog that has been beaten, abused, nearly starved to death, and so badly neglected it is covered in ticks and fleas, infested in internal parasites? Have you ever seen that? Ever looked into the eyes of an animal that has EVERY reason to hate humans, especially its owner, but it still loves. It can still wag its tail, lick your face.

Your clients dogs still love their owners because dogs are FAR from being the "inferior" species.

That is how I explain that.
No response to this?

Of course they will, but they are not performing out of trust but out of FEAR. And that is very sad.

Martin, there are many people here who have had success in training their dogs with positive only methods, and they believe in those methods. Your type of training is at the opposite end of the spectrum from theirs, which is why people question you. I don't think any of them have trained K9's though, so that is where the gap remains. Many have taken abused and rescued dogs that were deemed unfit for adoption and used these methods with success.

None of you would last a day on the streets where I patrol with my dog with your thinking. Your training systems would not WORK on the streets where I need my dog to work. So...you all just have pets that you show in some silly show ring or go to what you call obedience competitions. Some of you have more degrees after your names than a thermometer.
Don't you worry about my dogs. My clients freely come to my training and love it. They are so very pleaeed with their dogs. They love the training. Just because some unidentified person claims they saw an act of abuse take place, you folks run with it before hearing all the sides of the story.
Grow up andkeep playing doggie games if you like. I train dogs the correct way according to the German principles of time past. And you all just cannot stomach a dog getting what it needs. And that is what really angers most of you. Now...does any persons out there have any questions about my training that are specific?

That is wrong. There are plenty of people on this forum who believe in corrections. I am not totally opposed to a physical correction, I don't use them because my dogs don't need them, a verbal reprimand is good enough for them.

Sorry Hershel. Needed to clear that up though.

Because you may get the desired response from your dogs by abusing them, but to most of us, it's not worth it. No one is questioning that your methods work. I'm sure your dogs are very obedient. That is not the problem most of us have. The problem most of us are trying to voice is that it is NOT ok to abuse animals, regardless of the outcome.

I train mostly working dogs folks. I am happy that there are folks who train and raise rescue dogs, etc...best to you for the dog's sake.
But if you all were where I am at in a job you would use my methods. Unless you do not care if the dope head trying to kill both you and your dog wins.
Thanks DanL

Mr Richling... If you are so certain that undercorrected dogs will bite. (or rip your face off) how come so many agility dogs don't attack their owners? As by and large agility people are about as pure positive a group of trainers as you can get.

I have 5 dogs, 2 intact males and 3 intact females. None has ripped mine, or anyone elses anything. Do you believe they will at some later date attack because I don't hit them (now just to say I believe in consequences.. just not physical ones)

Just because a trainer trains a police dog in positive reinforcement does NOT mean he winds up with a GOOD police dog. I know that law enforcement is headed that way in this country. And their dogs are showing that the methods do not work on the streets too.

I wonder how may of Mr. Richlings clients animals will ever be put into the type of conditions that he claims he trained his own dog?

Apparently he only knows how to train a dog one way. He trains ever dog as if it is going on as he says patrol. What is the purpose of training an average family pet as if it is going on police patrol?

A dog can bite you in obedience when you under-correct him.
I am not talking about agility folks.

But I asked are you aware that people have been successfully training police dogs, and military animals without physical punishments? So is this a no, you believe your way is the only way? Sorry just not getting any answers on your training methods/beliefs.
