Oh gosh, the dapples are my fave. You dont see long hairs very often. I've never seen one in real life and dachshunds are pretty popular. I always see the black and tan smooth coats.

Really? Where do you live? The ones I don't see much of are wirehairs. Smooths are definitely the most popular since we're in Texas, but I do see a lot of longs!

I live in Oklahoma. Lived in Washington for most of my life and lived in Arizona for 5 years. Never seen a long hair. lol. Never seen a wire hair either. The long hairs are beautiful from what I've seen.

I am a huge fan of the wirehairs. I can't resist a dog with a beard. And they have amazingly cute little butts too. they are my favorite really small dog. I actually saw one at the dog park today. Not a good specimen, but still cute as can be.

I think the wire haired ones are super cute, I love the scruffy look!

Not that the long hairs aren't super freakin' cute as well. ;)

Tell me, how do you evaluate a puppy for show if the parents have never been shown? Can you just enter a pup for showing that has no show history in it's lines?

You can show any purebred reg intact dog. Generally you can't tell if a pup will be a good show prospect until they are at least 10 weeks.. even then things can change. I have seen dogs who do very well as puppies in the show ring-and then develop badly. (and vice versa)

So basically you can't tell if the dog is going to be good until maturity. (Dash is 2 and still changing-for the better)

Yeah - doxies are best evaluated at 8 weeks old. But you are taking a risk buying/keeping back any dog for show. Sometimes they look great for 8-12 weeks then they completely fall apart... then they could go back together again (or not). For now you can just hope for the best based on what their parents look like, which is what I am doing and what this to other show person is doing.

hmm you need to look at more than just parents... I would say you should look for sure at grandparents.. and possible great grand parents (anything beyond that, unless very out of standard isn't likely to have much effect) Many dogs (people, horses, etc) often come out looking very much like a grand parent.. so you dont' want to forget those..

I see a lot of Kaiden in Solo... for example.

To the OP.. anychance you can get us some puppy stacked pics? (hee hee I know how hard it is...)

Beau is identical to his grandsire pretty much. He looks little like either parent. Up until he was about 10-11 weeks he looked pretty bad (I say this lovingly). He seemed pretty low to the ground and was so fat as a puppy. Then he grew up some and came together better than his sister, who the breeders had kept. They both finished but he's a much nicer looking dog imho.

Dont you need to get pups evaluated by a professional or someone who IS experienced in showing that particular breed?

I am no professional, but I love puppy stacked pics!! lol.

Molly, I hope you're not still planning that litter for Sophie.. since if I read your website correctly her litter is expected around January, and she will be almost a year then. :(

Your bitch mandy is already under two and she has this litter. I hope you reconsider, especially since you cannot health test dogs under 2 years old.

Yes! Mandy is our homebred girl - her grandparents live just up the road and we have access to them. Mandy's Mom is here with us and her dad is with a friend of mine around San Antonio. I am in contact with O'Malley's breeders as well. We are very familiar with them!

The puppies are only 3.5 weeks old and can barely stand correctly, so we'll have to wait on those stacked pictures :)

Oh - and Sophie! The due date was tentative at best. I just like people to know what our tentative plans are, so they can kind of know what to expect. But Sophie is not turning out well - too high in the rear, coat is lacking, etc. So she will be spayed and placed in a pet home. We had a lot of people on her waiting list and I have yet to break the news.

I'm not sure what breed you're familiar with, Zhucca, but OFA allows dogs to be patella tested at 1 year of age and CERF at any age (our opthamologist recommends every 2 years). Of course PRA (cord 1) is genetic and detectable at any age, but it's easiest to swab after 3 weeks since there's more saliva.

If anyone wants to come out and visit with my dogs and ask me questions you are more than welcome to! Just let me know!

Yes as preliminaries, the only tests I am arguing are joints. Not as a solid score, as growth plates are not closed at 1year. Alot of breeders test at 1yr and then again as a adult at 2yrs old. Or some just at 2. To go off of a puppies' score as their solid rating would be questionable.

However that still leaves that Mandy is under 2 years and she has a litter on the ground?

I dont want to get into a debate or anything. I dont know much about breeding but if that female is under a year then she is still just a puppy herself...
