if this was a law with us...charlie would laugh at you, the chihuahuahs would look at you like you grew an extra head the moment you mentioned "walk" and jasper and ruby are pretty certain walk means "lets go chase squirrels" they all MUCH prefer running round in their yard...

It will INDEED be interesting to see how the mills escape this new law (if it passes) This proposal could in fact NOT be aimed at the general dog owner, but instead another method to use against mills..........very interesting concept, sort of like going after Hoffa for tax evasion, LOL
I don't know how its set up in Australia, but if its anything like the USA, it probably won't affect them. In the USA, the puppy mills are regulated under different laws than your regular joe shmoe pet owner. They are considered a commercial operation, and zoned as such, so they are subject to different rules/regulations.

Hmm, now I'm curious, I think I'll go look up Australia's laws.

I know, and that is CRAP IMO. I can see certain laws and standards stretched or suited to fit their "business" (still bogus, but understandable from a business view), but basic necessities like food, water, cleanliness, exercise, medical care, etc should NOT be able to be side stepped :(

(I know you know that too sweet, just stating the obvious here, LOL)

It's going to be pretty hard to force people to do something that they don't want to do.

The dogs definitely benefit from this, but I wonder how they could ever enforce such a law. Seems a bit unreasonable and idealist.

I imagine this could easily be fought. Dogs are considered property in the eyes of the law which is key. Them being considered property I can imagine it can be argued that you can't be forced to walk them anymore than you can be forced to walk your t.v.

Of course Australia's laws may differ, I'm saying if it ever came to the U.S.

That doesn't stop them from attempting to force mandatory spay/neuter in the US. They don't force me to have cable/satellite for my TV though, LOL

(just pointing that out ;))

I know the intent is likely to just tag something on in animal cruelty cases but this gives too much ammo to prosecute people that are not abusing their dogs as well. There are many owners on Chaz that don't walk their dogs every day. That doesn't mean they're not exercised. There are also legitimate reasons a dog might not be walked at all. I know there would be no way I would have made Nikki walk that long when she was older. She had terrible arthritis. And I'm also thinking this could be a potential problem for disabled dog owners that could not walk their dogs for whatever reason.

The more I look at it, the less I like it.
