Alight, new comparison.
Original breed standard, from way back when, did not include woolies OR reds. They simply didn't exist. Reds got bred in anyway, and generally speaking, an awesome working dog can't be a bad color unless it affects working ability and health. Right. Woolies DO affect working ability and CAN (though not always) affect health. The coat texture is not the same, the length makes for more matting, skin issues ranging from yeast infections to (in which the Sibe already has major problems), and overheating. A normal Sibe coat will protect from the heat and the cold. A wooly coat is exactly that...wooly. Its texture is useless in keeping the dog cool, and if shaved, they will quickly freeze at anything below 70F. It's a high maintenance dog with no purpose in life other than looking pretty.
Besides the fact, of course, that woolies DID NOT exist in the Sibe breed originally, and no one knows where they really originated. It's a major fault for working dogs, and this breed IS a working breed. If they don't have the temperament, standard or even the pedigree...what is it worth to the breed?
Akin to the Silver Lab problem, I guess.
So breeding for it AND calling the resulting dogs Sibes? No, that's not anyone interested in the betterment of the breed. That's someone looking to make a quick buck off of a "pretty" dog. Health contracts aren't uncommon, even in BYBers. Most just say the dog won't have anything wrong with it, and that's it. It doesn't mean they test for anything like hips, elbows, CERF, etc. Nor does it mean that it protects the dogs or owners should anything pop up. After all, who's to say hip dysplasia came from too much exercise, and not the parents? It makes you feel good about making a bad choice, but it doesn't mean anything.
I'm sorry if you all think it is drama, but I'll happily educate people on my breed. She may have already gotten the dog, and even sought out this fault (like many will seek out White Dobes, Silver Labs, etc), but that doesn't mean I couldn't step in, tell her what was up, and hope she didn't continue supporting it just because "it's cute".
Just because there are very, very few reputable Sibe breeders out there breeding for the best of the breed, it doesn't mean that it is perfectly okay to seek out someone who is purposely breeding and selling dogs that holds up the progress.
