I remember getting pressed rawhide bones for my Golden Retriever a few years back and it took her like an hour I wanna say and she wasnt really a big chewer I considered her an average chewer.

For my Husky mix I used to buy him huge rawhide bones like as long as from his sholders to the base of his tail =O and they stayed around for a long time I want to say a year but again he was more of an average chewer.

I gave my dogs a moose antler I never thought of preparing it I just gave it to them. They chewed on it and lugged it around and loved it.

Did anyone mention Nyla bones? Does she go for that kind of thing? I've always given them to my guys for years, they last a long time, and I've never had any broken teeth or other issues with them (I have with processed bones).

My kong killer has barely made a dent in the antlers Bill gave him last month. The antler was fresh when we gave it to him though. I don't know if an old antler would be dried out and splintery or not. I just washed them with dish soap and rinsed well to make sure there weren't buggies on them. No ill effects at all and he is still messing with it on a daily basis.

Thanks again everyone!

I really do want to know if antlers rot or anything like that because if they don't then the one I have laying around can be given to her.

I wasn't sure how long nyla's lasted but I'll give those a try!

And ACooper, let me just say thank you a ton for recommending that fun ball because it's been wonderful. I'm really loving it and infact I'm gonna buy another large one so both the dogs have one and then a smaller one for the ferrets.

Hahaha! That's really cute. How long has he had it?

Hannah has adopted it, she sleeps with it, carries it around with her and loves it to death. I have to make her lay on the couch when I put food in it for Kaylee because she gets really offended.

My mom got cheese in a can and I've been putting a dollop of it on each opening after I fill it with dry food :D

So thanks again!

When you give her the big beef bone RMBs and she gets sick of them, pick 'em up and fill them with cheese, peanut butter, treats, kibble, etc and pop 'em back in the freezer. I do this and that way I always have a refillable treat frozen and ready to give them without having to buy 8 million marrow bones a week!

I am pretty sure he's had it like a year now, I *think* it was last Christmas, there's a thread here about his gifts somewhere, I'll look and see........

EDIT: Yep, last Christmas, so he's had it for almost a year!

Here's the thread: http://www.chazhound.com/forums/t88821/

You'll notice I said "I doubt it will be ever lasting" because in all honesty I didn't think it would last a WEEK! LOL........I am truly shocked he's had it, used it daily, and kept it in ONE PIECE this long! LOL

Ok good! Now I'm really hoping that this ball has a nice long life.

Now I have to look through all those other toys I've dismissed as being too weak without trying. I would love to try more interactive toys for her but I was always afraid of it being destroyed

i use a whole deer hide w/the hair on, salted & dried flat in one big sheet. it's awkward to chew and so lasts longer than a rolled hide (tried it & it went quick). Sonic's last one lasted almost a year but he isn't more than an average chewer. if he doesn't catch one by mid december i'll have to go gun hunting to make sure he has one.

Hey Pops, if he gets one be sure and post a pic.

Also, what does the salted hide come out looking like? Is there still salt stuck to it?

Are you talking about stuff for in the yard or outside too?

I give mine frozen meat. If I want to entertain him I'll hang the frozen meat from a tree, which takes him even longer to chew and keeps him busy. Think of it as a spring pole/chew toy/meal lol.

I'll also thaw the meat (so it has some scent) and chuck it in the bushes so he has to search for it, that keeps him busy too.

And he has a few big blocks of old wood that serve as chew toys, among other things. But I guess if she doesn't like cow hooves she probably wouldn't be too impressed with a chunk of wood, huh? :p

That hide sounds great Pops! Unfortunately I'm not a hunter nor do I know any and I live in the Suburbs so it's not a readily available option. But I will keep that in mind if I'm ever somewhere with hunters around.

Xandra, that frozen meat from a spring pole sounds fun. I'll have to do that during the summer when I'm out with her. Unfortunately I'm looking for more inside things at the moment and hanging a frozen hunk of meat from one of the fans won't go over well with my family I think :D But when she does get meat it's almost always frozen because it takes her longer to eat.

The block of wood will only work if I tell her she can't have it :)

Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate it and I hope some of these suggestions will work for others even if they don't work for me and my monster chewer

Charlie is a heavy duty chewer, his nylabones last him 2 weeks to a month which is an incredible amount of time for him. I wish we could give him edible chew thingies, but he has a tendency to get explosive diarrhea.

We give Strider frozen raw turkey necks. Those last him a few hours but he is the type of dog to lick and savor it for the first hour before chowing down. The benefit to those, if your dog is the type to chew his food thoroughly, is they have to chew with their back teeth and it cleans them really well. They are also really cheap.

i soak the hide in a salt water solution made from rock salt disolved in warm water. 1 box to a 5 gal bucket w/ 4-4 1/2 gal of water. soak about 24 hours, then lay out & let it dry until hard. i don't scrape off fat or meat before processing as the dog will peel it off & eat it first.
i don't have high hopes of him making a catch as the undergrowth here is EXTREMELY thick. but we'll keep trying. if he succeeds i'll make the pics available.
