So my husband and I went to get Molly licensed today. The city hall employee told us it would be cheaper if we waited till after Molly was spayed, which we are planning to do next month. So we took the licensing sheet with us, to fill out at home and bring back when Molly is spayed. There's a question on it - "Have you had the dog longer than 30 days?" We have, but my husband thinks if we answer yes, then they will fine us. I'm not sure why they would do that, but then again, I'm not sure why they even have the question. Anyone have any ideas?

It's going to depend on the county/city. Here, there was no penalty for licensing your dog late--they just want it done!

Who's to say you didn't own your dog for a year, and then just move to the city and go to get it licensed? You'd own your dog over 30 days, but wouldn't be in violation.

Yeah, they won't fine you if you say you've had your dog for more than 30 days. Here in my city they're just happy to have you license your dog, they're not looking to fine you for stupid things like that. The only time you get fined here is if your dog gets loose and ends up in the SPCA and isn't licensed.

Here there's a 15 dollar difference if your dog is spayed/neutered or not. For intact dogs it's $25, for fixed it's only $10.

wow, here its $10 for fixed dogs but almost $40 for intact dogs.

here lisencing is due by june, if you get your dog or move to town in the space between July and the next june they dont require you to lisence your dog untill the next wave, there is no fee for not registering your dog during that time.

Its only a $10 difference, actually :p we prolly should've just gotten her license today, but oh well.

they also ask if you've lived here for longer than 30 days...

If they're not gonna fine us, then I want to know why they would want to know how long we've owned the dog. It confuses me, and I don't like to be confused, lol.

i was all worried about what to do re: licensing steve this year. i'm planning to get him neutered and microchipped at a year and get him a lifetime license then, but i was afraid of how much it would cost to license him as intact.

$8. altered dogs are $6.

i was surprised, but, well, that makes it easy enough!

I think its like $14 here, and you have to get a new one every Jan. ... and there is a late fee, unless you've had the dog less than 30 days

Many places it is mandatory. Here in the summer they hire students to go house to house to get you to buy a license or they'll fine you. City of Toronto was hardcore into making it loud and clear it's mandatory even for indoor cats. Seems to be a snitch program to turn in your neighbours too.

Cider for a lifetime license, spayed no chip was $35. Unaltered even with a chip I think is $65.. there is no yearly if not fixed.

It seems to be mandatory in most places. It is here. And wow, I can't believe how inexpensive it is for some of you! Here it's something like $35 per year for an unaltered dog, and I think $57 per year for intact dogs.

I've never lived anywhere where I had to license a dog. I think it's ridiculous...just another way for the gov. to remove our money from us. Ridiculous! Grrrrrr!

Going door to door? How invasive is that?!?!?!?!

Here the cost depends on where you get it done. The state requires 2.50 a year, but each county is allowed to charge up to $10 over that. It's a yearly thing and is only good for as long as your rabies is. So if you pay for a year, but your rabies expires in 6 months, then so does your license. Some counties can do a 3 yr, but they have to pay extra for that ability, so their license is more too. There's no fine if you don't have it done, unless something happens(ie bite, picked up stray, etc) and the dog isn't licensed. Also, the AC can seize a dog at any time that isn't licensed.

I always thought the license was just a way for them to enforce the rabies vacc, so I don't know why they would do lifetime... although, a onetime startup fee(and then you mail in your new rabies cert to renew) would be nice...
