here it is mandetory...
they dont go door to door or check or anything like that.

and ill be honest, neither of my 3 are liscensed (yeah im a rebel lol), but they are chipped and tagged, we have a securly fenced yard and they stil dont go out without supervision (we have hawks that have swooped at 10lb ruy so 3lb dodger isnt ever alowed out there unsupervised!) and when were not at home they are LEASHED at all times plain and simple, there not offleash unless were home, we dont have any dog parks around here so thats not a risk either... and our town taxes the heck out of us already (our water bill just doubled because the fee for the sewers just whent up enough to double it despite lack of increase in usage) the way i see it is there taking enough of my money for me to have to pay them to let me have my dogs too!

theres no fines or anything and they dont go door to door to see if your dogs are lisenced...
BUT, if your dog is picked up by AC or theres a bite complaint any fines and such are triple if your dog is unlisenced. in the case of AC youll be lucky to get your dog back because "you cant proove it" because your not on the town records as the dogs owner so they make it realy hard. it normally costs $60 to break your dog out of jail if its picked up by AC, if its not fixed however that fee JUMPS to almost $200!
fines for bites can be up to $1000 for lisenced dogs, but jump to up to $3000 if your dogs unlisenced.

I always thought the license was just a way for them to enforce the rabies vacc, so I don't know why they would do lifetime... although, a onetime startup fee(and then you mail in your new rabies cert to renew) would be nice...
That's how ours work. $10/year or $25/for up to 3 years (depending on when your rabies vac expires). Once you do the original one, you just mail in a copy of the certificate and a check or your cc number each year.

we just registered yesterday, $20 for desexed dogs, $90 for intact.

I know another town that charges less for intact dogs IF they belong to a registered breeder, I liek that idea.

Do you own your house? I'm asking because if you don't you can say yes you've owned your dogs for more than 30 days, but just moved to the area and wanted to get them licensed in the town you live now.

Oh, and it says on the Alexandria VA government site that dogs must be licensed within 30 days of moving to the city or acquiring the dog. Buuuuuut there is no penalty for licensing them late.

Odd.

Licensing, and higher fees for intact dogs is just one more way the ARistas force people to pay through the nose for breeding or having intact dogs.

It is also a very convenient way to track certain breeds, and target those owners in the event BSL is passed.

My dogs. My business. No one else's.

I've never lived anywhere where I had to license a dog. I think it's ridiculous...just another way for the gov. to remove our money from us. Ridiculous! Grrrrrr!

Going door to door? How invasive is that?!?!?!?!

Agree. Licensing a dog sounds rediculous! Good grief, I've already got to do the rabies each year. . .

Here it is cheaper to license if you ARE a breeder. What a crock. I'm trying to get that changed, to instead make it cheaper if you spay and neuter your animals versus keep the intact and allow them to irresponsibly breed.

I still have to get mine licensed. Not looking forward to that, because now since we aren't a breeder and they are all neutered, we are charged more because of the amount of dogs we have. ARG. Go figure, the county rewards all the irresponsible breeders that cost the county money in the long run for all the killing in the local shelters.

I did consider not licensing my dogs this year in protest. *snickers* but I suppose I will.

Here I know that the ACO's use it to reunite lost dogs with their owners, because lots of people only leave a dog license on their dog, no name tag.

Its just a form of identification to me.

Here its $5 for a three-year license. I don't know if there's a difference for intact dogs, I've never checked.

Here liscencing goes to our municipal gov. to pay for our "dog catchers" and for our local SPCA. They do it as a way to prevent stray dogs and to make it quick and easy for owners to get their dogs back if they get loose. And it actually works. There isn't a single stray dog around. I like the idea. It works really well here.

I think charging more for intact dogs is a great idea, considering here there is a $70 difference between desexed and intact, it might make jow blow with 2 intact dogs think to pay the one time fee to have them desexed than to pay the extra $70 every year.

I haven't licensed my dog and I probably won't. Theres been a rash of BSL passed in nearby cities and I ain't lettin my city know I have a bulldog, just in case.

By law here, you have 30 days to license or they charge you more. The license is supposed to prove a yearly rabies vaccine and they don't accept titers or 3 year vac. They do not do a S/N licensing fee difference, but maybe they should....

My dog has a tag with his name and our address and cell and home numbers on it. He has a nifty tag from the vet with Rabies Vac and a number on it plus the vet address and phone. Way I figure it, screw they city! The dog has a tag with his info and a tag proving rabies, we don't need the tag from them, too!

Quite honestly? I don't mind differential licensing to a degree, but when it's so massive? It does more harm than good. Irresponsible people typically aren't licencing to begin with. And the Dallas fees for my dogs would be $600 that I could use to go to herding camp. And meanwhile the BYBs and irresponsible owners who just can't be arsed to neuter just ignore the law.

ETA: I'm not IN Dallas anymore and this is a big part of the reason, but that fee is due if your dog is over 4 months and not already S/N. When my dog gets s/n is between me and my vet. So it's cost me $300+ in licensing just to get a dog to an age to breed- and no exception if I'm NOT breeding them!

Here in Louisiana, dogs are licensed when they are vaccinated for Rabies. We give them a copy of the rabies vaccination form which is also proof of registration with the parish (country to you non-Loozianians ;) ).

And here there is only a $5 difference between an altered animal and an intact one. But it's $8 and $13 and the price is included in the rabies vaccine, which runs you about $20 (or a few bucks less).

When we licensed Lucy, we had no idea what her breed was. I just put "unknown" and it was all good. (The dog doesn't have to come in person (in dog?) when you get the license) You could probably claim ignorance and get away with it :)
