Yay for puppies! I'm thinking the * means 8? The * is on the same key as the 8. Lol, poor Mach1, sounds so tired. I'm so glad there are puppies now. I was going crazy trying to keep up with this thread.

I can't believe anyone would go to sleep with a maiden bitch while puppies are still coming.

I want photos.

No mention of placentas, umbilicus, discharges, contractions, circumstances of deliveries?

How much is a kg?

Hmm Redyre. I don't think it was a "Good night, I'm putting on my jammies and going to bed." It sounds like it was more of a "pass-out-cold while waiting for puppies".

I think it's 8 puppies also. I hope they are all healthy and that mom is doing well. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for an update and pics.

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Yes, it is exhausting. When my Golden had 12 I was up over 36 hours... when I took the pups and Mom in for the check and shot, the vet took one look at me and said '' You sure look like hell! " Mach... I won't get on your case.... now let us know everything !!

Baby pictures please, they have got to be so adorable.

:D

I would also STRONGLY suggest a scale that weighs in OUNCES. It's very important to keep up with weight, and lack of weight gain can be your first indication a puppy might be in trouble.

Yes, it was a pass out cold circumstance. I made a little area next to her for the delivery. The first came at 1:35am, the next @ 2:35 am, the next @3:01am, and the fourth @ 4:05 am. So I take pics, weigh it, help clean it off, in the meantime she is still obsessivly compulsivly licking the others to death!I lay next to her, she started to become real peaceful, and fell asleep, so I gues my eyelids became real heavy and I fell asleep too! Last I looked at the clock it was 5:03am! I heard a puppy squeaking at 7:35, so I opened my eyes not even realizing I had been asleep, and sat up, and started counting them.....next thing I know, I see 6. So I yell @ hubby, he comes in and looks, says"Ohhhhhhhhh-AAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhh" and we decided Dix has got to go potty, it took some coaxing, but he got her outside, and I decided to change the soaked bedding. Im picking up puppies 2 at a time, and Im like"2,4,6,...........8!!!!!" 8 puppies! She had 4 while I passed out.My head wasnt 2 feet from her, and I did not hear a thing!

The delivery went very smooth for the 4 I saw. She knew exactly what to do after the first. The first, she started pushing, but when we came near, she'd stop, so we went into the other room where we could see her, and I saw her push a few times, tshe was sat up doing it, and then I saw her look for us, very worried looking, and I saw a sac on her back legs. So I came in,slowly pet her and console her, she turned to it and I started to tear the bag and she took over.
She was cleaning that poor pup and roling it around like a wrestler, she was sooooo obnoxious I had to get on her a few times, after the 3rd though she was like...........lick-lick-and done. After the struggle to push that first one out, the rest just seemed to fall out when they would come. No more panting or shaking, shed just sit up, and look down!
The stage 2 labor was so violent. I was shocked. She started NOTHING until 11:30. I took her potty and it seems as though that is what brought it on. She came in trembeling violently, panting profusely(sp?) and vocally crying and squalling. This lasted until the first pup. At 12"30 I called the vet, he told me to give it one more hour, and sure enough, it came!
She has handled the babies very well, alittle clumbsy but I guess grace will come! She is being a very good mom. She has licked one little babies cord alittle short, and it keeps slightly bleeding, but seems to have stopped now.We have a vet appt at 2:45pm.
My son took the camera to the store for development just now, it is 11:38, I told him 1 hour, and will post pics when I get it back.

Black and white were NOT the dominant genes folks-I thought red was not dominant! Wow, we got alittle bit of everything here, red, blk/white, a bronz color and chocolates! Absolutly gorgeous!

Ahhhhhhhhhhh Dixie Congrats I am glad to hear that she is doing well. And 8 babies, you will have your hands full in about 4 weeks, but will be well worth it. Congrats grandma.....

Be careful and watch her closely with the obsessive licking. Some new moms will literally lick the hair and skin right off of them. Don't let her worry the cords.

You need to make SURE that each puppy has had a bowel movement, and that each one has an open anus.

When you go to the vet, DO NOT take the puppies inside until they have a room ready for you. Do not use the main entrance and exit unless you absolutely have to.

Make up a bleach solution of 1 part bleach to 25 to 30 parts water. Take some with you. Before you get back in your car, spray the bottoms of your shoes, and the bottoms of the bitch's feet.

Remove and wash ALL your clothing immediately when you get home.

NO shoes in your house until after the first puppy vaccines. Make a place for shoes outside. Keep the bleach spray handy, and spray down ANY shoes that are coming inside the house before you come inside.

Keep visitors to a minimum the first several weeks.

Control of infectious disease, mainly parvo and contagious cough, should be a priority for you until puppies are old enough for the first vaccines.

Talk to the vet about early worming for round worms. You need to start at 2 weeks. Ask about Nemex 2, and also about the signs of and the prevention of Coccidia.

If there are any rear dewclaws, ask about removing them. I leave the front ones on my puppies, but if you don't plan to, ask about that too.

I cannot stress enough how terribly important it is to be SO VERY CAREFUL when you have to go to the vet with baby puppies.

also ask about a clean out shot for the bitch. This makes sure her uterus is empty and stimulates milk production.

Puppies should all be carefully checked for cleft palates.

After each feeding, you must make sure the bitch cleans and empties every puppy. If you get a squealer, first check to see if it needs to urinate or defecate. Healthy puppies are round, quiet, and jerk during their sleep time. They huddle together. Be suspicious of a problem if you find a puppy lying quietly and still away from the others.

The first several days the colostrum makes puppy stools a sticky gooey hard to clean off mess. Your bitch may need help keeping the little butts clean. A warm cloth compress can help matters along. After about 3 to 4 days the regular milk starts and this issue will go away.

Loose stool or diarrhea in ANY FORM is an emergency in puppies. Keep a close eye on elimination.

Weigh and record weights every single day for 2 weeks. Puppies should come close to doubling their birth weight in the first 7 days.
