I haven't posted on this forum for ages, I just decided to have a quick look and read some of the posts that have been made because I enjoy the dedication that the dog lovers here have. To start- I am glad that I am not able to see the pictures of these pups, I am already upset enough by hearing the conditions of these dogs as is. Seeing those pics would have upset me even further....
Saint Bernard puppies like ALL other breeds require socialization, but these guys need it even more so than some other breeds. A full grown male can reach weights of 180lbs and more. It is irresponsible to not have these pups growing up around constant human companionship to begin the socialization process. Imagine the damage an adult Saint can produce if weary and scared of people. Because of the Beethoven movies their has been a major increase in the backyard breeders of Saints, and thus the temperment of the Saint has been going terribly down hill. These dogs are the gentle giants of dogs WHEN BREED AND RAISED CORRECTLEY!!!! However, it is the back yard breeders and puppy mills that have managed to get Saint Bernards on the top ten list of aggressive dogs in the United States. Shame on them!!! Dirty cages are not appropriate for any dog.
I also wonder if the living environment is clearly unexeptable that the proper nutrition levels for the dogs are questionable. It is extremely vital that these dogs meet more than the minimum requirement for nutrition. They grow at extreme rates and without adequete nutrition joint and bone problems, which Saints are already predisposed for, WILL OCCUR, creating terrible heartbreak for the future owner of the Saint pup.
And last, if they keep the pups contained in soiled crates what kind of homes will be found for the pups, any old Joe??? Saint Bernard pups are adorable like all puppies, but the average person does not want a giant, drooling, shedding, expensive to care for, drooling, time consuming, and oh yeah- DROOLING!!!! adult to share their lives with. This is why Saints have one of the highest percentages per breed of rehoming later in their lives.
Like all breeding, only those who have the most knowledge and dedication to the breed in attempts to better the breed should EVER persue breeding. Breeding isn't for fun, and because puppies are cute. Breeding is a full time, money consuming, HARD job where the lives of the dogs must be thought of for the full duration of the dogs life!
Sorry about my rant. It kills me to see my fav breed being compromised. I know all too well the misery these dogs can go through once they are not the cute little pups they are when they initially come home.
