Katie is chipped and on her collar she has a tag with our info and phone #, and her rabies tag with our vets name. She is supervised constantly or on a leash when out front, and the backyard has a 6' privacy fence so she can go out back by herself for lil amounts of time. She prefers to be wherever I am, so that helps. We adopted her so she came chipped, we just had to register her($6.50) so the chip had our info not the rescue place.

Ash, check around for microchipping clinics held by shelters, humane societies, dog clubs and so on. You can generally get it done for as little as $25 or so, and then it's only an additional $7 (for AVID) to have your personal details updated on the chip.

Both mine are microchipped. In fact, the breeder required it.

Tai wears a collar and tags as well, but Kimi's show coat would be ruined by the constant rubbing of a collar (all you have to do is look at the fur on Tai's neck to see that this is so!) so her only form of identification is the chip.

Not such a big deal, as she's only let outside on leash (and the collar she's walked on has ID tags and a microchip tag as well), but if she were ever to get out the door without my knowledge, I would feel a lot better knowing she had the chip.

It's also nice because there's no way someone can remove this kind of identification. A collar can be taken off- a chip can't be taken out. I'm considering tattoos for my future dogs in addition to the chip.

Thanks Mordy. I will look into that.
