American Bulldog or American Bulldog / Lab? The head looks very lab-ish to me. But who knows, he might have three or four or six breeds in his heritage. :D

Thanx for all yalls opinions. I hit a few catahouls breeders up for their opinion and it was a no-go. despite finding pics of dogs that looked exactly like him, There were a few differences. His ears sit much higher on the head for one. Bottom line, he's a an ABD, with some other stuff in him. Guess Ill never know for sure. He's hard headed, Assertive & a general pain in the ass, But I love em!

I had a lab pointer mix that was big and heavy, you would never have guessed that there was pointer in him except for his coloring. I see lab american bulldog as well. What a lovely looking puppy. COngrats!

Thanx for all of yalls input. Its been a few months and Buddys getting bigger. He's about 9mos old now and right at 80lbs. Despite negative reviews, I had a DNA test done for S&G. My Vet has always held the opinion that he's AB/Pyrenees or APB/Pyrenees mix. Lo & behold, the results came back just that with the Bull Terrier being the majority of the DNA followed by Pryenees. Also included at much smaller percentages were Boxer, Newfoundland, Retriever & lastly Rottweiler. Who knows if thats all correct, But the majority of his DNA (>60%) was the above mentioned two breeds. At 9mos. old, how much more should I expect him togrow ,weightwise?

Heres a few pics of him to have a look at.

look at the thread on buddy's dna, it's good for a laugh.
he's built identical to my catXAB including the ears. there is a lot of junk being passed of as catahoulas. in fact early on a lot of leopard curs (rescently renamed by the UKC as leopard tree hounds) got registered w/ NALC as catahoulas and folks think those houndy things are what a houla is supposed to be.
what's his personality like that'll tell you as much as anything else. in the end it's all speculation.

He's a stoic. He's strong willed & hard headed. Very dominant acting, But not aggresive. He will see another dog and act as if he's going to go kill it, but instead he just wants to play/ dominate the other dog. He's like a teenage punk who thinks he's the ****. He wants to prove it to everyone, but he's doesnt fight or attack. He's gentle with small animals.

Dangit, I cant find that thread you mentioned. I search for 'Buddy dna maltese' and you would think it would be one of the first two or three. Any chance you can throw me a link up? Thanx.

the catahoula side of my dog made him man aggressive around the home when i was absent. his level of protectiveness of the wife & kids was dangerously high, in fact he went nuts trying to get at a neighbor who was spanking his daughter in their yard. off property while hunting he was very mello. forgot at home, he would also engage in nonviolent dominance displays toward other men even when i was around. the catXbull was synergistic in areas of protectiveness, dominance toward nonfamily members, and pain tolerance. the bull offset the hunt drive (which isn't especially common on this cross) & the natural high energy. the houla added a LOT of brains.
at 9 months he should just be starting into an adult personality. this is the point at which you'll have the best chance at a best guess.

I have seen 50/50 pei crosses that had very little wrinkling. If he was 1/4 pei or less he could easily have the horse coat without all the extra skin.
Pei mixes like my Padfoot can have loose but not hanging skin and hardly any wrinkles sometimes [his only one is on his forehead!]

I didnt think I would way this, but I am gonna have to agree with the vet as well... after seeing the updated pics. At first I only seen american bulldog, but now I can see how pyr might be in there. His coat is not as short as my pitties, I'll say that much.

Why are his hips so much higher than his shoulders? Arent most breeds shoulders higher and the hips slope downaward? Is that just a genetic fubar or indicative of one of his breeds?

Filas have butts higher than their shoulders, though I'd be really surprised if he had that in him. Though it's a fault, apparently it can happen in pyrs too.

Maybe it's just a fubar too. Depending on his age, it might be a weird growth spurt, some of the large breeds go through extremely awkward phases because their long bones grow at different rates.

My dog, Hera is also an Amer. Bull / Lab mix (or so the shelter where I rescued her says), and sh looks exactly like your beautiful dog there in build. The only difference I see, it that my dog's tail is not so bushy, and more whip-like, like a pit bull type... Here she is here:
