I have a quick question that maybe someone can answer for me.

Our dogs have been on Innova Evo in the past and did great. I tried to make the switch to raw and they aren't doing very well, so while I do some more research and figure out exactly what I'm doing I'm going to put them back on Innova for a short while.

I've been looking on Mordy's site (which is so helpful!) and have given some thought into trying Canidae or Eagle Pack.

Now, I know that the more protein the better, right? (unless your dog can't handle it) Well, Innova has 42% protein and Canidae and Eagle Pack both have about 24% protein. The fat % is also higher with Innova compared to the other two but other than that all 3 seem pretty close.

My question is - What is the difference between the Canidae/Eagle Pack vs. Innova made up with? Grains?

Also, what does the fat content mean? What is it used for -- to help make their skin/coat pretty?

I have one last question....

I have two dachshunds. My female is about 4-5lbs overweight and my male is right where he should be. I was thinking about using the reduced fat forumla to see if it would help get some weight off of her. Would this be bad for my male since he doesn't need to lose weight? I don't want to by two different types of dog food. Would it be just as good if I just cut back on her portions and walked her since it's only a small amount she needs to lose?
(I have been doing that and she is slowly losing weight).

Thanks!

I have been feeding Eagle pack for the last 7 years. I have switched to other foods including canidae, diamond, propac and professional. I have always come back to Eagle. My dogs lost there luster and sheen and energy with the other brands. I too also have doxies and have had no problem with them being over weight. But they are also very active dogs. Keep your female on her regular food and just walk her more. She will eventually lose the weight. Try the Eagle, you won't be disappointed.

Personaly I would stay with Evo, but if not that I would go to Reg Innova (green bag) Over Canidae or Eagle Pack.

Evo is kinda in a different ball park then Canidae/Eagle/Reg Innova. So I think of it as comparing apples to oranges instead of apples to apples like say

Evo to Solid golds "Bark at the moon" (I think thats its name) and NV's Raw instinct. All 3 of those have the same idea when it comes to grain free high protien, also I believe the protien % is teh same for all 3 foods.

I hope that helps some hehe

I have always fed the Innova Evo when feeding Innova. I'm actually considering picking up a small back up the Innova Evo Red Meat and seeing if they like it (my female is VERY picky). It has a 52% protein rate plus all the good stuff of the Innova Evo.

My thought is if I feed her more protein and less grains - she will lose the weight faster and I won't have to cut back on her food as much. She is small, so it is VERY important that she get back down to her 8lb range to prevent problems.

More protein, less carbs = weight loss -- just like with humans. It should work for dogs too I would think.

Thanks for the imput.

My dogs coat is a big concern of mine as well. The whole reason I started doing research about dog food is because my female had a litter of puppies and afterwards her coat because VERY dull and coarse. After switching to Innova Evo I was amazed at the difference -- her coat is so much healthier now.

If I was to try Eagle Pack, which formula do you recommend?

Canidae is grain-free and I swear by it. My dogs coat glistens and he is incredible healthy!

So, they why is it so low in protein compared to Innova? The only difference I can find between the two is the fat content/protein difference. What makes up the difference if it isn't grains?

I fed Hannah the Evo and just recently switched her to the Innova regular and have seen no change in coat or ahything else. I love Innova but we may be getting another puppy (bernese mountain dog) in two years and have been looking into the Eagle Pack Large Breed puppy formula because of all the research that I have seen that they do towards large breed puppies in particular. I think cutting back on your females food and more walking would help her get rid of the excess weight but I have never dealt with an overweight dog before though so I don't really know. I have tried canidae, eagle pack, and Evo and innova for my lab and she seems to do just the same on all those brands. I haven't noticed a change in coat or energy.

When I switched the Grrrrls from the Innova Adult to the EVO formula, the first thing I saw happen was Shiva just dropped the rest of her puppy pudge and sleeked up. Kharma - who always tended to look underfed - started filling out and her musculature became more rounded and defined. They are such different body types, even though they are the same breed. Shiva is a mesomorphic body type, but Kharma is a definite ectomorph. On the EVO they have both balanced out to their optimum physiques.

MisssAshby, check the comparison wizard http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=comp-wiz

You can look at each individual ingredient in the different foods and compare them, heads-up :)
:hail:

Thanks so much! I don't know why I didn't find that as I've been to the website several times over the past few days.

So, do you supplement your dogs with anything in addition to the Evo? For some reason I thought you fed raw. Anyways, thanks for your help.

What kind of doggies do you have?

I didn't supplement when I fed Evo but I did give Hannah raw meats as well. I started her on raw and she wasn't doing good and wasn't excepting anything but the chicken so I would give her one meal raw and one meal Evo but then her coat got really greasy so I went back to just evo and then switched to the regular innova. Renee gives the evo and the raw too though, I'm pretty sure.

I've got a GSD/wolf mix and two Fila Brasileiros . . . The raw is mainly to give them bones to crunch and just because I guess it makes me feel good to do something special for them . . . plus they do eat raw fast food - anything that isn't fast enough to get away from them ;) Shiva even eats skunk. I depend on the EVO as their main source of nutrition though. They loved the regular EVO, but they are even more enthused about the new Red Meat EVO - especially Bimmer.

I picked up the kids Innova Evo yesterday and they ate their first meal last night - they loved it as much as before. I think the next bag I'm going to pick up will be the Red Meat Evo. The place I get their food is a little feed store and they only had the 6lb bag and would have to special order the bigger bag, but hope to have the bigger bags in stock by the time I need food again.

I'm going to follow what you do. Main diet of Evo, but supplement with raw, yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit, etc.

Quick question -

According to the back of the bag I should be feeding between between 3/4 - 1 cup of dog food daily. When I was feeding Innova in the past I was feeding 1 cup to my male and 3/4 to my female.

My female is over weight and needs to drop about 5lbs. Would it be bad if I cut her back to 1/2 cup daily, or would she think I was starving her? If that is too much I was thinking about giving her 1/2 cup one day and 3/4 the next.

I need to know the best way of getting her weight back under control without starving her.

I feed Canidae, and my dogs do great on it. But that's my dogs. And no, It's not grain free... >o_O<

EVO is a good food... I don't think you should switch if they are doing well on it... just reduce the portions like what was mentioned. >^^;<
