Are they both nipple feeding every feeding? At our hospital... 36 weeks is premature, but not bad. They are a bit small but then again, they're twins.. so it's often expected. At 36 weeks they have their suck reflex so they really shouldn't have a big problem with feedings. They will probably put them on a formula higher in calories... we use neosure. And let me be the first to say that they have the most horrific smelling turds on that stuff..lol.

The main criteria a baby has to meet before going home at our hospital is to be able to consistently nipple feed their whole feeding within a half hour and retain it. Obviously we wouldn't let a 2 pound baby go home, but we often send them home when they are in the neighborhood of 3 1/2 to 5 pounds.

I hope they get to come home soon... and I can't wait to see pics of them. I love the names you picked out. Congratulations again!

Thanks Nancy :D

They have no problem eating... even when we are feeding them it takes about 30 minutes but they eat more than the minimum... they have great appetite, and no vomiting/spitting at all.

I think they're just waiting until they put on more weight (they're already back to what they were at birth almost and it's only been 3 days) and until they can maintain their body temperature... Lisa has to be in the incubator most of the time still, even if she gets out for feedings etc, and Chris still has to be under the heating light occasionally.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that sometimes the smaller babies do have a problem with maintaining their body temperature. Once they are able to wean them out of the isolettes to an open crib that is a good sign.. I would imagine it will be their body temperature that will keep them there for a week rather than their feedings. It may not even take that long. We usually keep them in the isolettes until they reach about 1800 grams or so. How many grams do they weigh?

About 1500 for her and 2100 for him I think...
yeah, that sounds about right. I would have to guess that if they're already starting to gain rather than lose weight and they are taking full feeds which is probably in the neighborhood of 45 to 60cc or so... they should gain about 30 grams a night (give or take)

He might gain it a bit faster because he's a little bigger. He's in an open crib, right? I would definately expect him to come home first.. probably in a couple of days from the way it sounds. It won't be long before she can come home. When they do wean her to an open crib.. put her in a onsie and some fleece pajamas or something that will be real warm and a nice warm hat... that will help her keep her body temperature up. Those fleece blankets seem to keep them the warmest.

I'll keep that in mind!

They say she needs to eat about 25 cc and him at least 33 cc every 3 hours... but it's usually 50 to 60 cc.

And yes he's in an open crib.

okay, well 25 isn't quite a "full" feed yet, but it won't be long at all. They have this formula they go by as far as how many calories per kilogram..etc. Are either one of them on iv fluids? I would imagine she would have to be getting some kinds of fluids if she's only taking 25 per feeding at 3 days of age. Are they eating every 3 hours? He sounds like he's well on his way to coming home. You must be so excited. I still think it won't be much longer for her either. They usually wean to the open crib relatively quick once they get enough meat on their bones to keep them warm. :D She can have some of my extra meat on my bones.. I Have too much of it!

No she eats more than that, they just want her to take 25cc minimum... but she usually eats 50 to 60. No IV fluids.

They were both in a crib the first day, but they moved her to the incubator after one day.. we'll see how long it takes! Either way, if it's less than a week, we'll have to stay in New Jersey for a few days until paperwork is done... We'll see :D

OOhhh... I must have read it wrong. I thought he was taking 50 to 60. If she's taking that much then she's doing great! So, it will be the temperature instabilty that will likely keep her there for a few extra days. And if it takes a week.. then so be it. You'll be home with both of them before you know it. How exciting this must be for you guys!!

The nursery is totally not ready... We're going to keep the babies in the bedroom with us for the first months, so we'll have some time (hopefully!) to work on it... still need to buy another crib!

Our house has a bad layout, no bathrooms upstairs, and we have to change the guest room for the nursery now because the other room is too small for two... so just easier for us to have the babies with us, next to the bathroom etc... although we're going to have to move our two dressers out to make room for two cribs (portable probably, so they can fit).

But yes whenever it is ready we'll post pictures!

There is a nice crib at target that isnt humungous. And its relativly inexpensive ($132) and goes all teh way up to a dbl. bed. Also if you have a Burlington Coat Factory they have cheap Pack and Plays and nice bassinets.

I was thinking of just getting pack n play or bassinets for the first months, i'm just worried the dogs are going to knock them down considering how energetic they are :(

My sister used a pack n' play (that's the collapsable playpens with the bassinet insert, right?) and she swears by it. It worked great for her.

I'm so excited! This Chaz baby boom is a wonderful thing. I can't wait until you can bring them home.
