I would also like to post what my friend wrote in the paper this past week. We have been fighting ignorant people in the newspaper saying they want large dogs banned. Her article says a lot.
Banning Of Large Dog Breeds A Baseless Idea
Editor:
I am one of the organizers for the K9 Fun Day that was held May 5. We had planned this event to specifically raise awareness about the typical family dog, to show people that all breeds of dogs big and small can enjoy themselves together. That's exactly what we did; we had a lot of fun. There was not one incident or concern.
I cannot believe how out of hand this whole dog banning/restricting epidemic is getting. There are certain people suggesting that we apply a "large dog ban" in order to protect innocent people.
Well, what exactly describes a large dog? Golden Retriever, German Sheppard, Black Labrador these are all large dogs.
Where do you draw the line? The health department has reported their highest volume of dog bites are caused by small housedogs. Do you suggest we ban all small housedogs as well?
If communities continue to ban dog breeds, we are going to end up just like Italy where there are 92 breeds of dogs banned, and yet there has been no decrease in dog attacks. They have even banned breeds like the Welsh corgi, Queen Elizabeth's favourite dog. That breed of dog is no bigger than a cat.
Saskatchewan has one of the best dangerous dog bylaws in place province wide; there is no need to ban any certain breed. This law will sentence offenders to six months in jail or a $10,000 fine. When have we ever heard of an offender going to jail because his or her dog attacked someone?
Never! Because it is never enforced. If people were facing jail time I would think they would pay closer attention to what there animal is doing.
The incident involving the mail carrier in Moose Jaw recently is a perfect example. The owner of the Aphgan cross had been in court once already. The dog had attacked before and the victim had to sue the owners themselves. The case was thrown out. And the dog was allowed to go home. Where was the enforcement of our laws?
In the entire province of Ontario, various cities across Canada and over 200 counties in the Untied States if you own a dog that looks anything like the breeds that are banned they will come into your home whether you are there or not, seize your pet and destroy it. You will never see them again. Just because of what they look like.
That's racism, is it not? To single out something just because they look different is discrimination and its wrong.
What happened to innocent until proven guilty? This is Canada, the home of the free, and we are trying to exterminate breeds of dogs like Adolph Hitler tried to do to different cultures of people just because they were not like him. Three million dogs are put down in shelters every year in the United States alone. These dogs were family pets; they had never harmed anyone in their lives. And they are being destroyed everyday thanks to Breed banning.
Those are harsh numbers, and if you think that it isn't happening here, you're wrong. If you think that your pet is safe, you're wrong. The city councils are not dealing with problem they are just covering it up. They are forcing the problem owners with their dogs to different communities by banning their breed of dog, instead of punishing them for there actions.
Several communities around Saskatchewan have introduced breed bans just to deal with one incident. The others have applied the bylaw without ever have a problem at all. These communities are villages, and small towns, not large cities.
Animal Protection Services at the Regina Humane Society has given me a statement saying they will never adopt a breed ban, due to the fact that it is the owners that are the problem not specific breeds or sizes of dogs.
Now if our capital city doesn't like the idea why do small communities that vote on bylaws in "coffee row" believe so?
Dogs are not born vicious. They are putty in human hands, that we can mould into whatever we want them to be.
