Get the puppy! Once it's yours, it'll be cute and you'll love it and you'll become fond of the color, IMO. However, I don't think you'd be wrong to get the second choice puppy either, can you meet them before you come to a decision? Are these the puppies in MA?

I would still get the puppy. I don't have any colors that I strongly dislike, though. Even the one color (pattern really) that I like the least... if that was the best puppy for me, I'd be on it.

I'd get the puppy. When I was looking for a poodle, I wanted white, second choice black. My cute, matchy apricot dog is the handsomest thing ever :)

I'd get the puppy of the "wrong" color. I hated Meg's color when I got her, but it is now the prettiest thing ever.

When you fall in love with the dog, you wind up loving the color, in my experience.

This happened to me when I wanted my second bird. I really, really wanted a Whitefaced Cinnamon Pearl Pied Cockatiel hen. I wanted that color so bad! I wound up meeting my Lutino hen. She was in such bad shape, but her personality - it was amazing. She's totally an awesome bird. The color has grown on me.

My vote is try to meet the puppies, if you can. If this is truly the right pup for you, you will know the second you meet face to face. If you truly can't look past the color, don't settle. The right puppy will come along when it is meant to.

and he likes piebald black tri

Eh, After many, many pictures of petfinder dogs, Crossbone was the only one he said was cute and I jumped on it.
I love the chocolate color! Get that one so I can drool over pictures. :D

Well, Abrams isn't Michael's ideal dog in terms of looks. But he loves him anyway. Although as all of the pups looked the same, and I was assigned Abrams by the breeder, we both didn't get much choice. I just made sure I went with a litter that was going to be all brown. Hahaha Poor Michael didn't even get a say in the breed...

I would get the puppy. I don't choose color first to be honest. Temperament matters over all to me. You will grow to love the color and the puppy of course. ;)

Do you think this same statement applies to Ken? :p He's being the pain in this, I, personally, love the puppy!
I think if the puppy is as wonderful as Crosserton he will forget he ever worried about color.

Tell him color is the least important aspect of the dog.

If color was a big deal Watson would be traded in for a brindle or black and white and Menchi would be dyed several shades darker :D

If at all possible I'd go meet them both (with Mr. Color-Picky) and go from there :)

Would depend why I wanted puppy and what compromise might mean.

Pet dog? Working? Sport? Show? All rounder?

Guess it depends what your priorities are.

I'd get the puppy.

First off, I don't think there is a color I find ugly. Maybe solid liver is not my preference, but eh.

Secondly, the color won't matter much in a while. A sound structured dog almost always looks good IMO, other people will compliment the dog, you'll take nice photos that really show him off etc. He'll become beautiful to you regardless. I can't remember hearing anyone who has a structurally and behaviourally great dog go "ohh, hmm I wish I hadn't gotten you, I'm not a fan of black..." It's just not the sort of thing you think when the dog impresses and pleases you in every other way.

Get puppy. I wanted the black tri male in Pike's litter, but Pike fit me perfectly and I can't imagine not having him now.

It depends on how much importance you put on color. It also depends on how badly you want a puppy NOW and how much you'd be willing to wait for another litter. But I'd choose the best conformation, best temperament above all else. I wouldn't choose 2nd choice if there's a compromise in the really important stuff. And to me, color takes a back seat.

When I picked my first Poodle, I was really partial to silvers. But they weren't that easy to come by. I found a stellar breeder with a white and some blacks. There was one brown but he was spoken for. He lived very close which I preferred over someone in another state or further away. (that was another thing of importance to me personally) So, I went to see the pups and I loved the rambunctious white one. And wound up taking one of the blacks too. They all had good conformation and excellent temperaments. I thought white was pretty striking and liked it too. But it hadn't been my first choice. Now, I don't know what I was thinking because Matisse is gorgeous and color turned out to be not very important after all. And little black Maurice is adorable beyond words. He's just hard to photograph. lol. I was lucky to get to choose at all. Usually the breeder chooses for you. But in this case, he said they all are equally nice, any of them would work for me, and I was first in line after a friend of his.

So, decide what things are priority...getting puppy sooner, how important color is on a scale of 1-10, vicinity of breeder, make sure it's a fabulous breeder, best conformation, temperament, health of ancestors you can find and go for it.

That is soooo what happens. I am so glad I have my two and they weren't the first color choice. But I love them and the matter of coloring just faded away. Besides, you can dye white Poodles and have fun with that. I probably won't, but one can. lol

Get the puppy unless it's something you really don't like at all.

I didn't want a black tri when I got Journey. It was my least favourite colour. I thought it was boring lol. Lucky for me that all the girls but one was either red tri or red merle, I thought, thinking for sure I would get the colour I wanted . Lo and behold I ended up with the one and only black tri girl haha. And I am so glad I did. It's now my favourite Aussie colour and she is the best dog ever.

There are a couple of markings and colours I would strongly hesitate about, but 99% of the time I would not let colour get in the way of the right dog.

I think your husband would come around. My dad thought Dance with her pink nose was the ugliest dog in the world and now she is his favourite and thinks she's adorable.

Get the puppy! I'm extremely not fond of "cookies and cream" ticking that looks like Sharky the pit bull, but I'd definately still get the dog!! If it really bothered me that much... there's always dye. But like they say, a good dog is always the right color.

Fiona was supposed to be a blue girl preferably with a mask. Meh. Right time, right gender, right puppy...the color wasn't a big concern. I had the option of another female pup with a red mask, but the temperament wasn't what I wanted. Temperament/drive over color, especially with a sport pup.
