with a stellar temperament, structure and seems like an all around awesome sport prospect...but was a COLOR you were not fond of would you

1. Get puppy
1. Get puppy & dye fur ;)
2. Ask breeder to allow you to get second pick who is still great, just not the "best" but is the color you like
3. Wait for a puppy in another litter (which may be in the middle of winter & diff. parents) and hope for the "total package"?

Hypothetically, of course ;)

Depends on how "not fond of" I was...

In GSDs, I prefer sable dogs, then blanket backs, then blacks, then bi colors, then whites. I would stop at blacks probably, as far as preference. I wouldn't take a bi color or white, but would take any of the top three if it was the right dog.

Otherwise I would try for 2nd pick of the litter, if it would still work and was more appealing to me, color-wise.

;)

It depends.

Would the second pick puppy also fit what I want? Just not as well? Like, is puppy still outgoing, confident, with drive, just not AS confident or AS outgoing or AS drivey? How gross is the color? Is it just a "man, I really like X color better" or "Holy Jesus God, I hate it."

I'm petty. I really like certain colors. And since I've never needed a serious sport prospect, I have been able to select a dog with the color I want and the temperament I want.

If it were me, personally, I would go for the second pick IF it would still be suitable and I would still be happy if, for whatever reason, it was lacking one of the "better" elements first pick puppy has. If second pick puppy was lacking that *something*, or I knew if it didn't turn out like first pick puppy I would be disappointed, or if the color of first pick puppy was one I could learn to love (and not the Holy Jesus God color), I'd go with first pick puppy.

But I'm petty. And don't actively compete in sports. :p

I'd ask for 2nd choice, assuming the dog still met your criteria.

However, it's almost guaranteed if you get puppy, you'll learn to love the colour as you learn to love the puppy.

I agree, depends on what "not fond" means. I prefer sables and blues. I would take a bi-black or tri though. I don't dislike them, they just aren't my fave.

Then I could sing "one of these things is not like the others" every time I had all my dogs together.

Also depends on the second pick and what's missing from that one, but at this stage in the game I am really good at knowing what I want and what I don't want.

Get puppy - Ziva was supposed to be a male red acd boy, but otherwise she met all my criteria, so she stayed and it was one of the best ideas ever. ;)

It would really depend on how much I disliked the color of the puppy, and how much I liked my ideal color. There are breeds where I would prefer one color over another, but not enough to pass up on a puppy. There are other colors that I might actually pass on though.

If you really don't like the color, I think taking the second choice pup would probably work out. I don't have a ton of faith in judging adult temperament by puppy temperament beyond confidence levels and skittishness. I've seen the wildest fiestiest puppy settle into a calm dog at an early age, and the middle of the road pup turn wild. So unless the second pup had a nervous temperament or something, I'd probably pick that one.

When we got Menchi what I did not want was a fawn Shar Pei. I was hoping for a sable or chocolate...

Menchi walked into the room and color stopped mattering in a heartbeat :)

If the puppy is everything you want...you won't even notice the color after you fall in love :D

Ken didn't even want one dog. Then you were never going to have 2 dogs at once.

He'll end up loving that color the most. Get the puppy.

Wasn't he unsure of Crossbone at first? If so, then yes. :D
Eh, After many, many pictures of petfinder dogs, Crossbone was the only one he said was cute and I jumped on it.
