I really am not sure I should be posting this but here goes.
Biz, my sable GSD, genetically fearful, had never been to a dog park because I had no idea how he would act or react to an uncontrolled situation (like that mattered anyhow).
When he bit my friend at my house unprovoked, meaning he was not being threatened stared at or anything like that, it was on his left thigh. He bit him so badly it bled thru the band aid and now he'll have a scar. Luckily it was my friend who is not going to sue me.

Why do I post this? Coincidences
A. I knew better than taking him to a dog park.
B. He bit my friend on the left thigh, not the right but a thigh none the less.
C. A sable male who had messed up genes (come to find out 4 dogs w/the same sire were put down for the same issues)

That's a really strange coincidence...
do you think it could be at all herding-related?

I know that with Gonzo, and many other Border Collies I've met, they nip at calves or ankles when they feel they need to "control" a person that they perceive as threatening, or unknown, or unpredictable, or simply moving. I believe that behavior is influenced by fear/insecurity, but also mis-directed herding drive.

I doubt it could be linked to the sable gene. Maybe ONE of the genes that make a sable a sable.

I agree with Gonzo though, it could be a mis-wired herding gene.

Or it could just be a poorly bred, fearful aggressive dog.
