I have some bad news that will be hard for me to put into words right now...

My precious, beautiful baby (cocker spaniel), Maddie, was attacked and I had to rush her to the emergency vet Wed. I was home when it happened {they were outside} but I hardly managed to pull the dog off of her and get her inside.

I was bit, but I will heal. physically.

Maddie has a whole on the top of her head that required 2 stitches, and her right eyeball came out of its socket from where the dog basically had Maddie's mouth in her head :(

The vet was able to put her eye back in the socket, but there's still a chance she could loose it. And if she is able to keep it, its only a 20%-30% chance that she will have vision in that eye... its not looking good.
Her eye is sewn shut with blue stitches and a button. A real button. Like one right off of your shirt  The Dr said that it's to distribute the pressure of the stitches to the eye lid, because of the swelling...

She is on antibiotics and pain meds twice a day, and an antibacterial ointment that I have to put in her eye, from a hole in the corner, 3x a day.
She had a follow-up appt yesterday (Monday) and he is pleased that the swelling is down, but a little concerned that the eye/swelling appears to be up a little high in the socket.

so, there's still a chance she could loose it, but the odds are more in our favor now. She's moving her eye under the lid, as if she's looking around, and moved it away from the vet when he was examining her stitches. He said this is a very good sign right now.

She's doing very well, letting me medicate her, clean the eye, whatever. She has to wear a cone collar because she keeps trying to swipe her eye with her paw. She keeps crashing into things with the cone and I always end up carrying her up the stairs and stuff. My family has been wonderful with watching her and caring for her when I am at work... My mother, very amused, tells me that she is milking it and she can in fact walk up the stairs and stuff quite fine. That's okay, though, she deserves to be spoiled!
Other than that her eating and behavior are otherwise normal. She still eats like a pig, and tries to chase squirrels when I let her outside (I'm preventing her from doing it though). She sleeps a lot, because of the meds, and I believe she's maybe starting to get separation anxiety from me... but she'll be okay with that, I guess.

Thoughts/prayers are very much appreciated, but no I do not really feel like talking about specifics of what happened - I already am sick because I can't really eat/sleep after the whole incident... You can ask me if I'm/she's okay, or whatever, but please do not ask me to explain what happened just yet. When you think I'm ready you can PM me or text me or whatever...

I won't be on a whole lot for at least 3 weeks (the vet said we might be able to remove the button/stitches in three weeks), but I may post any updates if wanted (she has another vet appt next Monday)... so... yea...

Anyway, Please keep Maddie in your thoughts / prayers!
:(

OH NO!!! I'm glad she made it through relatively unscathed and I hope her button eye heals up. Ohh, she just got a pirate name...Button-Eye Maddie.

Did that make you smile at all? I hope so. Get better soon Maddie!!

And you too...I hope your bite was a mere grazing of the skin and only needs a little Neosporin and some band-aids.

Omg, Dana, that's awful. Poor Maddie, and poor YOU. I'd be really shaken up, too.

You're both in my thoughts, please keep us updated.

Oh Brattina! That is just horrendous what happened to her. She is really very lucky that she wasn't killed. I do hope her eye will be all right but even if she loses it, you know how adaptable dogs are. She's going to be all right.

Something I noticed when I thought Lyric was going to die from the condition he has (he may not, it's not as bad as I thought) I was soooooo despondent and saddened, really depressed, crying, hugging him, fussing over him. I completely forgot what I learned about dogs reading our moods and being so affected by them. That dog went from feeling fine and in good spirits to becoming depressed, shaky, moping around, no energy. It could have been the drug he was on, but when I cheered up and forced myself not to worry as much, he became chipper and goofy, just like his normal self.

I know how upset and worried you must be. This was a horrible accident. But be glad he wasn't killed and try to be as "chipper" as you can because that will help his mood too. And a good mood helps heal. I firmly believe that.

Sending my heart felt care and concern to you and your little Maddie. Do keep us posted.

Oh no!

Here sending a huge
to you and Maddie.

We'll keep her in our prayers, and hope that she will have a speedy recovery with no major impact on her vision.

Oh hon, I am so sorry! Thank heavens she is healing. I know this is a hard time emotionally for you and understand completely why you do not want to get into details. But the important thing now is that you and your sweet doggie heal together.

Good thoughts are coming your way for both you and Maddie. I'm so sorry this had to happen.

Please remember to take care of yourself as well as you are taking care of your girl. It sounds like it is going to be a long three weeks, and she's going to need you healthy and strong.

And yes, please do post updates whenever you can.

Hi Brattina... very sorry to hear about Maggie!!! You'd be amazed at how quickly dogs heal, so be optimistic about that eye. I'm assuming you know this other dog, both of them being outside together? If they're from the same household there are some changes behavioral changes you'll see on Maggies part. Email me if that was the case and you'd like some info on dealing with that. I have a client who dealt with this recently and one of the dogs was killed, so you are very lucky. Hang in there!!!

I am really sorry hun. I know you are really upset, but I am sure you two will pull through together. It's hard to be optimistic, but try for your little one. You two are strong.
