actually most people that have hunted jags w/ dogs have used open mouth hounds. the Lee brothers used their family line of hounds to hunt jag in Mexico & Brasil and lost a lot of dogs every time. but then so did/does everyone that uses the same technique. i doubt i would use a lot of filas as they are just very heavy built and would take a huge amount of work to get the speed & stamina of hounds. but i would gladly cross a good dog onto some excellent hounds. the results should be less open, w/ heavier bone, thicker skin & heavier muscling w/ little or no loss of scenting ability rather like a heavy hound.

I like Cardis but have only met a few. I was under the impression they were also calmer and less drivey. True? Not true?
I think a lot of it depends on the breeder. There are quite a few out there doing dog sports. As far as calmness goes I am not completely sure. I know a few that are very drivey, though I haven't met a ton of the breed. I can find out though, now I am interested too :p

Australian Cattle Dog - these dogs can really be D/A from what I've seen. They are tough, intense dogs.
Just wanted to say that there were 15ish ACD's at the adoption fair I was at last weekend and we had very few problems with dog fights. It was mostly just overstimulation snarkiness. I don't think I've spent enough time around the breed to judge if they are generally DA or not but most of the ones I've met (and the half a one I own lol) are very standoffish with dogs they don't know. I wouldn't call them DA, just protective of their bubble until they are comfortable.

Also, why would they be a problem with renting? We didn't have to worry about it with Mu because our last landlord didn't care and now we own our house. I've never seen them excluded on an apartment lease though.

Who said they'd be a problem with renting? Not I. Or at least I didn't mean to...I mean dobies and GSDs may be a problem with renting.

Pops, hunting cats is what they've been bred for -- among other things that take speed and agility -- for hundreds of years. Your hounds are slow and clumsy compared to a GOOD Fila. A Doberman is slow and clumsy compared to a good Fila. Seriously.

And that open mouth gets hounds killed. That's just ????? Tells the jaguar exactly where it needs to circle back around and ambush from the rear, which is also a Fila tactic.

This is not a slow, cumbersome dog. I have seen mine do this, time after time after time, with young -- dangerous -- bulls, and there are few animals more agile and quick than a young bull. The bulls never have a chance ;)

Laur: As far as Aussies go, some of the females get pretty small. The Fury, out of Slash V lines, is about 18" at the shoulder. She's a bit under the low end of the standard, it happens sometimes. And while they do have a sense of humor, if you get a dog with some working lines up close, they've got quite the work ethic.

So many dog breeds I want.... not enough years in my life.

I'm always adding different breeds to my "someday" list. Just in the past couple weeks I've decided, "hey, a Brittany would be a cool dog to have," which is weird for me because I've never really had the desire to own any of the sporting breeds. I know nothing about them and have no clue if a Brittany would be my kind of dog, they've just been interesting to me recently.

I tell myself my next dog will be a border collie but knowing how I am, I'll probably end up with another boxer or some other shelter mutt. :)

Belgian Laekenois, because I found a breeder I love.

As silly as it sounds, I'm quite intrigued by American Bulldogs--the ones with real faces and long legs... those appeal to me.
