Some of you may have been following my story of adopting
a senior dog called Rocky from the humaine society.

I have not been on here as much because we where trying
to work through some issues.

I am devastated over this, but I had to return Rocky to the
humane society. Rocky was clearly not used to other dogs
and was showing a lot of aggression towards Charlie. I tried
to work on this but it only got worse :(

I have always been a firm believer in doing everything you
can with your companions, and I know I may get negative
responses on here. I cannot live a life of rotating and
crating my dogs. I do not think it would be fair to either
of them.

All I ask is you please be sensitive to me right now, because
I am crying and devastated over this. :(

I'm so sorry things didn't work out for you. I have been in the same situation, I know how your feeling. It's best to give him back where he has a chance of finding a home that's better suited to him.

It's important to make sure it is a "match" with our current pets--and sometimes you can't know that until you are "living" it--I'm sure you tried your best--and that's all anyone can do! If it wasn't going to work for the long run, then best to know that and make changes sooner rather than later. And now the shelter knows he should probably be a single dog in a home. Don't be too tough on yourself. Maybe you could "sponser"Rocky at the shelter? Just a thought.

You tried your best. What you did do will make him a better dog with a one dog family .

You made the effort and that's what counts. You have to think first of your current family and clearly Rocky wouldn't have been happy in your home any more than Charlie would be if they had stayed together.

I'm sorry you had to take him back. But don't worry it's not your fault :) The humane society should have tested him with other dogs before re-homing him :( You did a great thing at giving him a chance of a loving home....It's to bad he blew it though. So, cheer up, there is another out there for you waiting to be loved :)

I would NEVER fault someone for giving up a dog if things were unworkable or unreasonable. It wouldn't be reasonable for me either to deal with those kinds of issues with other dogs in the household. I just wouldn't do it. So, that said, I agree with Grammy, that a one dog household may be found for him and that would be a happier situation for him as well. This is just one of those things. We can't be everything to all people or all creatures. No one can. Dogs and homes need to fit like a glove. Anything less isn't right for either. So don't fault yourself. He'll be fine.

you did an amazing amazing thing by adopting a senior dog.
unfortunately, he didn't fit in with an already stable family.
especially with an older dog, it's hard to get the dog aggression out.
i'm very sorry you had to give Rocky up. maybe when you're ready you can adopt another senior that you know is dog-friendly. And hopefully someone without another dog will take Rocky into their home.

oh, thank you everyone. I had to leave the computer for a bit because I was afraid I would break down if people came down on me :(

The humane society is excellent with what they work with. Infact they are one of the nicest and well organized humane societies I have been in. They did test him with other dogs and he showed my aggression at all, just like he showed none when we did the meet and greet with Charlie. I guess its different when you put a dog in a home environment because then they see each other constantly and have to share the same house.

I can't even think about trying this again, I feel like I let everyone down :(

I do not know if he would not be good around other dogs at all, its hard to say. Do some dogs just like people not like each other?

Sometimes dogs, like people, just don't click together, Tara. It's not your fault. It just happens that way sometimes. I had to do the same thing with a cat I rescued once. He just would not/could not tolerate being in the same house with Gonzo. It tore me up to take him back, but everyone was miserable - especially the poor cat.

Thank you.

I hope from my experience with him it will help him to find the best home.
He also did really well with some good food, chews and rest I think.

Now the shelter will know he is probably better off in a one dog home,
and I was also able to tell them the testing we did to try and find out
why he was having bladder issues and how to fix them. I hope that
I helped in a small way, and I don't really care at all about the vet
fees. I was not even expecting to get the adoption fee back.

YOu were not the right home. You tried and it didn't work. Nothing to feel guilty about, he has a chance to go to the right home and hopefully that will happen. The point is you tried and that is all that counts.

I hope he finds a good home. I would not have brought him back if
I wasn't 100% sure they would not put him to sleep. Thankfully our
shelters in Ontario are not very full and healthy friendly dogs don't
really get put down at our humane societies. I do hate to think of
him in a cage again though :(

Dont feel bad about taking him back, sometimes a match just wasnt meant to be...it happens. When I had Bonnie here last winter I had to take her back because things just werent working out and she wasnt happy...OC was too exuberant for her older age, the busier commotion of town life versus country life overwhelmed her and she liked to ""nip"" kids in an attempt to steal their mittens and run off with them. She was happy with my but miserable in her location so we took her back to the kennel. I say you should give it another shot! Who knows maybe there''s a pup out there just waiting for you to come along and scoop him up ;)

Don't feel bad, you did everything you could ;) :) (((((((((( HUGS )))))))))))

And you even did some good for Rocky in helping with the Bladder issues and how they need to be fixed! :) And now they know eve more, that he needs to be a one dog family....IMO you gave some thing to Rocky that no one else could, A loving, warm home for some days of rest and found out about his Bladder and know how to treat it. And gave the shelter more details about him, so that he maybe able to find his forever home, the RIGHT home ;)

You did a wonderful thing for, dear Rocky. ((((( Hugs ))))

Thank you, I think I'll let my heart heal, and go from there.

I feel a lot better after reading this. Thank you for understanding. I kept telling myself to try it a bit longer it would get better, but my heart kept saying it wouldn't :( He's a great dog and I have no doubt he would have been here forever it Charlie was not in the picture.

Thank you again everyone, I do feel a lot better :)

Somethings are just not meant to be. I'm sure you give it your best. I feel for you though I can't understand the pain it must be.
