The dogs (well, only 2, Gyp and Sasha) just killed a kitten.

We had 2 little kittens (well, not little. Probably... 4 months old) who were living in our shed. From the shed they're able to get inside, or get outdoors. The little orange one was outside, and Sasha and Gyp were too. They're always out together. We've NEVER had problems with these kittens and the dogs.

They got her, and I went out because the others were barking, and I heard the kitten scream. She's not actually dead, but she's close. There's no way she'd live, even if we got her to the vet, and I have no way of getting her to a vet. She's bleeding from her ears, mouth, and she's panting, and can't/wont get up.

We've had issues with Sasha and Gyp both (Zoey too, sometimes) with kittens, but usually MUCH younger. Gyp and Zoey will both eat kittens, so we try not to have any (we have barn cats/indoor cats who really aren't pets, just use our house as a place to crash), and if we do, I work hard to keep them away from them. Sasha has only ever had one problem with kittens, and it was YEARS ago, where she was literally playing with her like a toy. The cat made it, with no damage done, and she lived a long, full life.

Now, our dogs always chase the cats, and I'm used to it... But I don't know what to do about this kitten. I can't put her out of her misery, but I feel bad that she's just laying there. I put her in a box, to keep her comfortable until she passes.

The dogs got an ear full - I know it's not right to yell at them, but I was so furious, I did. And I would yell some more if I didn't know they've already moved on from their cat killing.

I suppose the only way to stop all the cat issues, killing and chasing, is to get rid of the cats...

I don't know, it just bothers me that they went LOOKING for the kitten. I doubt she was mewing, like they usually do before Zoey goes looking for them...

Gah. It's just a rant. Please don't bash for my dogs misbehaving, or for my having kittens. I'm just the kid in the house, I can't afford to spay all the cats. And my male isn't old enough to be neutered yet, but will be. (since he's not old enough, he's not breeding either - it's tom cats that come to the farm).

RIP Poor little orange pudder kitten.

If it isn't dead yet, you need a way to end its suffering.

Some dogs just don't get slong with cats. Dekka's Snip doesn't. They rehomed their cat so it couldn't be harmed. She's vigilant to never let him out of her sight outside as there are neighbours with barn cats.

if you can't afford to get all your cats neutered or spayed then you have 2 choices. Give them up for adoption to an organization such as the SPCA where they will neuter and spay them before they are adopted or look for a low cost neuter and spay clinic and save the money for that purpose. Otherwise they will continue to breed and it will get out of control.

In the future if you want to keep your dogs away from your cats either get a wire kennel to keep them in when outside or leash them when they are outside and make sure the leash is long enough but not long enough to get to the cats where they hang out.

I agree, the kitty from the sound of it will not survive. even if you could just get him to a vet or somewhere to have him euthanized..

as for the dogs, these things happen. they are animals. Kenya killed my hamster that was in a room with a closed door. she broke in, and killed it. I wanted to be mad at her.. but in the end.. shes a dog. its not really her fault. she didn't know that it was my "pet".

Stop feeding or attending to cats, that would be my suggestion. the more you feed them, the more cats will be encouraged to come, eat, have kittens etc..

But if you must. SECURE the shed and area around it. Im not sure how you would go about doing this.. cats are usually more than capable of avoiding dogs but kittens on the other hand, don't really know. they are too young to really know

At least take it to the local shelter, tell them it was attacked by a dog and let them put it down if you do not want to take it to your own vet and have it put down. Don't let it suffer. Please.

If the cat is still alive and you can't get it to a vet, don't you have a neighbour that will do it? If not you have to put your emotions aside for a second and do it yourself. It's not right to let it suffer.

Long term, you either need to fix the cats or put some really heavy training on the dogs.

You don't understand. I'm 16, I have only my permit, and the only car in the yard is a chevy venture with the transmission out of it. All my family is an hour away at least, and by the time they got here, the kitten will probably be dead. And there's no way I can bring myself to take it into the barn and hit it over the head, or drown it like we would a dying chicken.

As for the cats being spayed, there's a local clinic (I say local - it's a 2 1/2 hour drive to the clinic) that do spays/neuters for a small donation, and we're looking into that. Until then we try to find homes for kittens who appear, and try to keep them out of the dogs reach.

This kitten has lasted this long hiding from them. I don't know if they snuck up on her, or what.

I feel terrible. But there's NO way I can put her out of her misery. I'm just trying to keep her comfortable until she passes, and if by some chance she's still alive, but not doing well when a parent gets home, they'll take care of her.

:(

Long term, both of those things need to be done, in my opinion. Spays and neuters for all the cats, and some heavy hard core training done for all the dogs... I'm just not sure what type of training to use when I've used all that comes to mind already.

Then call them and ask them to come pick her up. This is considered an emergency situation for many since part of the job is to stop suffering. They will come and pick her up. Some have mobile euth abilities to deal with this type of thing.

They're still an hour away. I live in the middle of no where. My closest neighbor is an elderly lady, and her grandchildren.

I think she's almost gone now, anyway. She's calmed down and is just laying.

just make her as comfortable as possible i guess.
talk to her, stroke her, maybe get some towels

and word of advice.. don't bury her in the backyard. the dogs might dig her up.. believe me from experience, thats not something you wanna see

Not sure where we'll burry her.. We have a rock pile where my old sheltie's burried (It's the only place where the dogs can dig her up - eww, that would scar me for life!), so she'll probably go there along side Tootsie.

Our cat was moving her six week old kittens across the yard yesterday when the dogs where in there unsupervised because it is totally secure and our JRT who ignores the cats completely managed to get hold off and kill both of them. I let the dogs in and he came in and dropped one at my feet. Later when i went out I nearly stood on the other one. They were both dead when I found them. I was horrified. I know I shouted and raged when I saw the first one but the second one just made me cry.

if the kitten is still alive call the animal control.
you dont have to tell them your dogs got her, just say you found her in the street shes dying looks like she was attacked by a dog or something and your only 16 and have no way to take her to the vet not the capability to humanely euthanize her...
they will usually come and pick up and humanely euthanize.

I agree, call animal control. It's not fair to that kitten to let it suffer a horrid death. Please call them now, had you called as soon as this happened they would be there by now, they can probably at least inject a sedative at your place.

You may only be 16. But I have to say that your dogs killing that cat makes it your responsibility. Things happen. I don't blame the dogs for doing it, but I most definitely blame you for sitting around twiddling your thumbs for a few hours while the poor thing suffered and finally died on its own. That part, that part it inhumane and sickening.

MP, if that's your opinion, fine. I'm a shallow kid who couldn't put my emotions aside and kill the cat. Sorry, but that's what I am.

I'm NOT one to kill an animal, in there's a chance she might live, and really, with the way she was moving around, I considered that she may still live.

Blame it on me, that's okay. I take the blame. It was MY fault I didn't end the kittens suffering, I know, but as selfish as it is, I'll sleep better tonight knowing I let a cat suffer instead of flat out killing the cat with my hands.
