On Saturday night, I was trying to leave my parents house. Ben was not interested. He had his ball and he was not coming, no matter how much I called. I had my hands full and traded everything into one hand and picked him up with the other.
He decided he was not having any of that and kicked off my chest to get to the ball. He landed right on the top of his head.

He staggered forward and yelled about 3 seconds after he hit the ground. I scooped him up immediately and soothed him, rubbed his head and kissed him.

His left leg started pulling funny and I lifted him up against my chest, asking if he was ok. The next thing I know he started siezing. I have never been so scared in my life. My mother ran to the phone and called the emergency vet. I remained strangely calm while he was having the siezure and just stroked him and held him. I took him outside and the cool air snapped him out of it.

I rushed him off to the E Vet where he was examined and reflexes came back normal. He was given an anti-inflamatory and sent home with me with instructions to keep an eye on him. He was fine the following day, despite missing a walk with his sister.

I took him to my vet this morning and he tested 100%. They have given me a mild steriod to help keep brain swelling down and I have to take him back on Friday for one more reflex test.

Needless to say, I feel like I should not even own an animal right now. How could I have done something so idiotic to my baby boy! I feel aweful! :(

Just be happy he's okay! I know that with squirmy dogs it's sometimes hard... All of us make mistakes.... I'm glad he's appearing to be okay - I hope only good news comes from Friday's vet trip!

Thanks all. My vet keeps telling me to not blame myself too. I just can't help it! You are supposed to protect your dogs, not break their skulls open! :(

its not like you threw him against the wall, it was an accident. and with squirmy small dogs.. its a hard one to avoid. my moms bichons do it ALL THE TIME! they ask to be picked up, and then kick their little bodies out of your grip.

Yeah, I know. He really does not seem all the worse for wear. He is back to his usual crazy self. I just hope he doesn't hold it against me.
He did give me loads of kisses when he came round from the seizure.

The same exact thing happened to Jack last Christmas, and I felt completely awful. He jumped in my arms, I missed and he landed on the curb of the road. He started seizing while I'm running this 50 lb dog home (we were downtown at a tree lighting ceremony). Worst 10 minutes of my life.

Glad he's feeling okay!

Oh poor Ben, glad to hear he's checking out well. That would have scared me to death too.

I tried to do the one handed pick up with Summer which is stupid.... That was one of the first things I was told when we were looking at pap puppies- NEVER expect them not to jump. I was told to always have a hand on the front of their chests because they have a tendency to push off you and jump. It's been true, for some reason they think they can fly. Mine have no qualms about jumping off of very scary tall things. anyways, Summer landed on her feet, luckily. It still scared me and made me feel horrible.

I have certainly learned my lesson. No more one handed lifts. I will be picking them both up two handed from now on. He has always been very good about being picked up. It is just that he was so focussed on his ball that he was NOT leaving Grannys house.

Silly flying butterflies. Someone should tell them they don't really have wings. ;)
That made me smile, thank you. He is my little angel for sure. I don't think I have ever adored a dog like him. I love him and Lilly just the same amount, but in different ways. He is my baby boy, my blue eyed prince.
Lilly is my good friend and companion who is always there for me, no matter what.

I don't know, they are just the most addicting breed. They get to you like no other dogs I've had before. And somehow even when they do extremely scary or annoying things, they're still able to worm that way into your heart. It's a good thing, or else I'd have to kill them for stunts like these! :lol-sign:

I'm glad he's okay. :) I would feel bad, too -- but, honestly, it was human and he's fine! You're a great dog mom.

It wouldn't have occurred to me to worry about that, but I'm not used to small dogs and am used to cats. In fact, I dropped a puppy onto the ground from a few inches above once when I was volunteering for a rescue (before Bailey). I felt like a total a$$ when the poor guy stumbled and fell (and, thankfully, was fine, and quite forgiving). I was used to cats who purposefully jump out of my arms pretty frequently and land with no issues.

Don't blame yourself hun, accidents happen. I'm so glad he tested out OK.

Dogs have amazing ways of scaring us. I've been there a few times myself. ((((((((puppydog))))))) Give Ben a cookie from me.

Well, the little stunt man is 100% today. He has just come back from a lovely walk and he ran the whole way. Seems he is a typical boy, bounced back almost immediately. I think he and Lilly have a contest on to see who can stop my heart first!
